Reader “Jeff” sends along a link to the latest article in the White Plains tabloid, Journal-News, reporting on the hornets nest occasioned by their publication of an interactive map showing the identity and address of all registered gun owners in Westchester County and surrounding areas. Cyndee Royle

Cyndee Royle in better days, long ago and far way

Editor Cyndee Royle defends her decision and in fact sounds quite smug about it. Her paper is apparently still trying to obtain, and publish, information on how many guns, and their type, are registered to each owner, presumably to make shopping easier for gun thieves. Nothing more disappointing than getting a Remington 870 when you’ve been hoping for a Ruger Mini Thirty.

Let’s keep those cards and letters (and telephone calls, of course) coming.

I am not at all certain why the hoopla about this. The names and addresses of permit holders are public records, available to the general public at all times. Additionally, I'd bet that at least some of these people had some outside indicator to potential burglars that they were armed -- an NRA sticker or one of those "Trespassers will be shot" signs, etc. It seems the newspaper helped discourage burglary of those houses (at least for burglars who are also computer geeks).

Some years ago, some town in (IIRC) Georgia tried to make Everyone have a gun and required those who refused to put a sign on their front lawn saying This House is Defenseless. The NRA supporters thought that was great fun!

And now the names/phone/addresses of the shit-stirrers is pubic record too.

People are going to have fun with this one. They are going to regret starting this. I'm assuming that they don't already regret it.

Not true. There was no such requirement "to put a sign on their front lawn saying This House is Defenseless". And the law requires the heads of households to be aware of their responsibilities, not "make Everyone have a gun."

The resulting drop in crime was startling, causing those who predicted dire consequences to remain silent for 30 years, emerging only recently to post twisted non truths in the hope that none here would be the wiser.

In fact the law was a symbolic gesture in response to Morton Grove Illinois' gun ban within the city limits. Kennesaw Ga's ordinance has many exemptions including one for conscientious objectors, and no one has ever been prosecuted under the law since 1982. And, it certainly does not infringe on the privacy of residents or expose them to retaliation from hoplophobes or other mental defectives.

Just think of all those poor Jews who were rounded up and loaded in rail cars by Hitler Youths carrying dummy drill rifles. (One boy with a toy gun could return with a whole synagogue! The Jews were betting that diamonds would secure their freedom. They were wrong))

The Jews who meekly surrendered were shamed when The Jews in The Warsaw Ghetto kept the Nazis at bay with a few rusty guns. The Nazis didn't know how many guns they may have faced but there were enough to give the Nazis "a moment of pause".

And Oskar Schindler bought guns from a corrupt local official and trained his Jewish factory workers how to use them in case the Germans attempted to slaughter the workers when the Reich fell. This factoid was conveniently omitted from the film by Stephen Spielberg.

One can only wonder why Schindler was honored as a Righteous among the Nations. After all, the very idea that Jews should be responsible for their own survival flies in the face of all of those poor, weeping babushkas (some of whom were even women!) that pose for Spielberg's books and films.

It would seem to me that the people not marked on the map - and therefore presumably weaponless and helpless if burglarized - should be the ones complaining.

That is because you believe some are more equal than others....

The paper went out to make victims of the public at large but you think only some have a right to demand justice?

How jewish of you.

It would seem to me that the people not marked on the map - and therefore presumably weaponless and helpless if burglarized - should be the ones complaining.

That assertion is flawed because 50% of American households have at least one gun. Identifying armed households may A) negate the element of surprise in self defense scenarios and B) target the home for invasion when unoccupied to steal the resident's firearms, a valuable black market commodity)

Whenever a burglar enters a dwelling he or she risks a surprise encounter with an armed homeowner with the law on his/her side. So, all who "burg" for a living and even the lucky ones who are just beginning to explore its fun and profit potential are statistically assured of entering an armed household in as few as three unlawful entries.

This is why penetrations of occupied residential dwellings is commonplace in the UK. In fact, the law will be turned against a homeowner who injures or kills one or more criminals-it's against the law to harm such crims in the course of their chosen field of endeavor with any type of weapon. BUT, if you can with your bare hands physically best a home invader WHO ATTACKS you, you may be spared criminal penalties. (And sued for civil penalties, i.e. supporting the crim's family if he/she is unable to do so-I'm certainly not arguing in favor of restored gun freedoms for a bunch of sexually repressed football hooligans. A country like the UK, adrift in a sea of moral uncertainty doesn't deserve any G_D given rights if lawyers' and criminals' livelihoods are a higher priority)

"Presumably weaponless"?

If someone lines up 10 glasses of water and poisons half of them before forcing you to drink, would you do so after presuming that the glasses are "poisonless"?

No, in the US it pays to invade with a gang of heavily armed thugs, preferably with a bogus no-knock search warrant obtained with a perjured deposition, and even better when the warrant is executed at the wrong address where the occupants are not involved in the underground economy. (Think: Atlanta narcs) After all, there are so many unsavory characters involved like cops, border guards, US Senators, federal judges and brown bagging prosecutors and defense attorneys, banksters, etc.,.

I once suggested to an anti gun publisher (of one of the inconsequential fish wrappers for which I scribbled columns) that even unarmed residents derive a benefit from an armed populace because crims don't know which home is "a gateway to heaven". If the publisher disagreed then he should put a sign in his yard that read, "ATT CRIMS, THERE ARE NO FIREARMS IN THIS HOUSE!", I said.

"BULLSHIT!", he ejaculated! His calm, intellectual manner vaporized when confronted with an argument for which he had no rebuttal. Once I had him on the ropes I said, "Not only would such a sign guarantee the personal safety of a burglar, but it may minimize legal difficulties for those of us who are armed to the teeth!" And, eventually the argument that guns are largely useless for home defense may finally have some supporting stats, assuming that some of the anti gun residents are women who have that certain je ne sais quoi that will attract rapists (Not necessarily beauty, rape is a crime of violence first and a sex crime incidentally)

And, in the interest of fairness to criminals, unarmed residents should be required to keep valuables at home to justify the criminal acts. After all, it wouldn't be fair if gun owners are the only class who still offer temptations to drug users and habitual, violent home invaders.

Would you support a law that requires all unarmed anti gun households to keep a minimum of say, $5,000 worth of boodle on hand to guarantee that crims aren't put at risk out of the need to enter gun owners' (who can defend their property) homes? That's one way to steam roller gun owners and antis flat and therefore equal, right?

those silly commercials always bothered me & i doubted that 'kennesaw' story was even true. Number 1 because under what pretext could a corporation (city) DEMAND anyone buy anything? that is exactly the same as people always complain about obamacare, mandatory auto ins, etc. any city demands i buy anything i would tell them to F off. the fact that its a gun in this case, & that guns are good to have, is not the point. Aside from that i simply didnt believe the story about the law in kennesaw.

By the way ive been to kennesaw many times. it is not that small of a town.

i found this interesting article on the matter, which makes sense. the fact is that no one 'has to buy a gun' in podunk GA or anywhere else, and thats the way it should be.

http://rense.com/general9/gunlaw.htm Although he is pleased with the outcome, Bentley said he was originally opposed to drafting the law.

"I didn't think it could be written in a constitutional fashion," he said. "Obviously, it was constitutional, because the American Civil Liberties Union challenged it in court and we won."

Jones said the ACLU challenged the law in a federal court just after it was passed. In response, the city added a clause adding conscientious objectors to the list of those exempt.

...

Jones said one motivation for the council passing the ordinance had to do with publicity.

"It was done in response to a law passed by Morton Grove, Ill., outlawing gun ownership within the city limits," he said. "Several council members were upset Morton Grove had gotten a lot of attention with their ordinance so they decided to top them.

"They figured the gun ownership ordinance would knock that city right off the front pages. They were right."

Jones said the ensuing publicity surrounding the law has given Kennesaw worldwide name recognition.

"I have been to Australia and Europe and when I tell people I am from Kennesaw they recognize the name as the place that requires everyone to own a gun," he said.

.....

He said the law in its final form has many loopholes, so not everyone is required to own a gun.

"There are many outs," he said. "When you look at it, almost anyone could fit into one of the exempted groups."

Kennesaw Police Chief Dwaine Wilson said no one has ever been prosecuted under the ordinance.

Among those exempt are residents "who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine." Others exempt include the physically and mentally disabled, paupers and those convicted of a felony.

==========================================================================

ALSO: (excerpt)

http://www.denbar.org/docket/doc_articles.cfm?ArticleID=7094

In Kennesaw, Ga., gun ownership is not only a right, it is a legal requirement. In 1982 the City Council of this then-rural town of 5,000 citizens passed an ordinance requiring every head of household to maintain a firearm and ammunition. The idea was to prevent crime; in theory, no one would want to burglarize a home that with certainty was occupied by a gun-toting head of household.

In an odd twist, the ACLU challenged this ordinance in federal court. Typically, it is the conservative right that challenges laws by which government intrudes on our right to make personal decisions. But whether government involvement in our lives is good or bad depends on whose ideology is being gored (for example, many conservatives who think government should leave us alone have no problem with laws that tell us who we can marry).

The federal court in Georgia upheld the Kennesaw mandatory gun law. The court did, however, require an amendment to the ordinance to exempt conscientious objectors. Criminals, the mentally ill, and people who could not afford a firearm were already excused from the law’s requirements (it must have been a relief to the citizens of Kennesaw that their elected representatives did not require criminals to own a firearm).

Although home burglaries did decline in the two years after the law was passed, the gun ownership law was largely symbolic. Prior to the enactment of this ordinance, an estimated 95 percent of Kennesaw residents already owned a firearm. The gun ownership requirement is still on the books but probably not a factor in crime reduction. There is no penalty for violating this ordinance, no one has ever been prosecuted for not owning a gun, and only 50 percent of the current population of 35,000 own a firearm.

But what, I hear you ask, does any of this have to do with me, a Colorado citizen who can own a firearm or not, as I wish? The answer is obvious. If citizens of Kennesaw can be required to purchase a commercial product such as a gun, it follows that citizens of Colorado can be required to purchase a commercial product, such as health insurance. The precedent is clear and controlling.

We already have case law in Colorado to support the mandatory health insurance requirement contained in last year’s Affordable Care Act (the so-called health care reform law that really is not about health care reform; it is about health insurance reform). In 1970, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that a mandatory motorcycle helmet law was constitutional because it bore a reasonable relationship to the public health, safety, and welfare (that statute is no longer on the books, but the Supreme Court ruling is still viable law). We also now require Colorado motor vehicle drivers to buy liability insurance. It can thus be seen that laws requiring citizens to purchase commercial products are constitutional.

that was part of John Ross's excellent novel, Unintended Consequences--my favorite book ever.

Excellent reference to the book.

I look for it to be banned by the High Court Of The World (you know, the one with the sundial and Masonic symbols in Jerusalem) in a twisted but unanimous decision that exonerates Hollywood of any undue societal influence leading to crime while underscoring the incalculable dangers from books that telegraph the wrong message....

The fact that no one reads anymore is irrelevant. If it could be used as source material by enemies like Prof. Kevin MacDonald and ol' David Whatzisname in Loozeeanna then itz got 2 go!

Actually, your first post (#1) is a great post. It really kick started this thread and caught my eye! Heck, I took a walk surrounded by rabbits and other furry critters and a bluebird even landed on my shoulder after I read it.

Thank YOU!

The Militia of a State is comprised of its citizenry and is intended to be armed. In the early days of this country, they would be provided arms free of charge to them, if they didn't have a gun and ammo and couldn't afford to purchase what was required. That does not mean that the Federales can make Americans financially support the insurance racket.

You're welcome, DAWG. And thank you for the nice comment about my post.
