CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson University student Nathan Weaver just wanted to put together a project to help figure out the best way to assist turtles in crossing the road. But he also ended up with a peek into the dark souls of some human beings.

Weaver put realistic-looking rubber turtles, no bigger than a saucer, in the middle of a lane on a busy road near campus. Then he got out of the way and watched as over the next hour, seven drivers intentionally ran over the turtle, and several more appeared to try to hit the defenseless animal, but missed.

Let this be a lesson to you, Turtle. Don't fall out in the road.

This Happy New Year crap is way more lame than is the Merry Christmas stuff.

So stupid to me.

But, I guess that I could be mistaken...

I was raised near the largest lake in Illinois, which is so old it's only about four feet deep.

Every year snapping turtles would cross a highway to lay eggs. I used to pick them up and carry them across the road.

People generally didn't run them over but I've seen more than one squashed one.

When I see snapping turtles crossing the road, we pick 'em up, take 'em home and coat 'em in seasoned flour and slow cook them in a covered cast iron skillet for about 4 hours. Not much meat on 'em, but they sure are tasty.

Don't blame me. I didn't vote.
