Title: Linux Sandbox on Win7 to surf the web

My wife and children each have laptops that have Win7. None of them are interested in running Linux on them. However, I'm tired of battling the viruses and malware they tend to pick up (the kids mostly). Norton works well enough but there are times when it let's something slip through. Therefore, I have been thinking about building a sandbox by using VMware player to run a very small Linux distribution (like Tiny Core Linux or SliTaz) and force the kids to surf the Internet using Firefox on Linux.

Is it worth the hassle? The problem I see is if they want to download something that only runs on Windows. I could always have them do that with IE on windows itself I guess. Comments please.

Just download to a shared folder. But in some cases that might defeat the purpose.

Probably not worth the hassle if you turn the client machines into "reload upon problem" boxes. That tends to solve most problems and the boxes are out of commission while being reloaded.

That too tends to cure the problem because nobody likes their machine being unusable for any length of time.

A people unwilling to use force, once diplomatic efforts have been exhausted, in order to preserve or obtain their liberty deserves the tyrants that rule over them.

Well I installed Tiny Core Linux on the VMWare Player successfully, however, that particular distro is not user friendly in the least. I cannot even figure out how to set up the wireless, much less how to download Firefox and I have neither the time, patience, nor inclination to try and figure out. I'll try a few other small distro's, maybe Puppy Linux or something. Hopefully it will be more user friendly, although I have my doubts. Taking away the user friendliness is likely one way they are able to make it a tiny distro.

I think it would be less of a hassle for you to run Linux as your base OS and use the VM software to run Windows 7. Running Linux in a virtual machine that runs on top of Windows 7 kind of defeats the purpose of security.

Maybe, but none of them are interested in doing that. This is the next best thing. I've read that a Windows system using a Linux sandbox to surf the web is just as secure as having a Linux system itself. At least as far as picking up viruses and malware from the web goes.

The point may be moot though because so far setting up a tiny linux distro on VMPlayer is beyond my capabilities. It's not automated like Ubuntu and SolusOS were/are. You have to do everything manually and I don't have the skills.
