The thing is helicopters are different from airplanes An airplane by it's nature wants to fly, and if not interfered with too strongly by unusual events or incompetent piloting, it will fly.

A helicopter does not want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces and controls working in opposition to each other.

And if there is any disturbance in this delicate balance the helicopter stops flying immediately and disastrously.

There is no such thing as a gliding helicopter.

That's why being a helicopter pilot is so different from being an airplane pilot, and why in generality airplane pilots are open, clear-eyed, buoyant, extroverts. And helicopter pilots are brooders, introspective anticipators of trouble.

They know if something bad has not happened it is about to.

There is no such thing as a gliding helicopter.

As has been famously observed, the glide ratio of a helicopter is the same as that of an anvil.

I learned long ago that the definition of a Helicopter is; A tremendously complex piece of machinery that is capable of Flying around in the air to look for a Place to Crash!

I thought helicopters that lose their engines (assuming the engines are not firmly connected to the heli-blades, which early models were) can use the descending energy to keep the blades spinning, possibly enough to allow for something resembling a hard landing.

Obviously various models would vary in any such ability.

The definition of a Helicopter is; 3,000 nuts, each trying to rattle the one next to it off.
