Story at-a-glance

Today’s “throwaway society” has created mountains of plastic waste, including billions of bottles and bags that clog up landfills and take hundreds of years to break down, as this documentary shows Twenty billion pounds of plastic is making its way into our oceans each year, where wave action turns them into a plastic soup; the five oceanic gyres each have massive whirlpools of trash in their cores, damaging sea life and marine ecosystems Fish and other sea creatures are being contaminated with plastic, in and around their bodies; sea turtles mistake plastic bags for jellyfish (their favorite food), and albatrosses are found strangled to death by plastic six-pack rings; many species consume plastic “nurdles” and suffer dire consequences, including death Chemicals from plastic waste harm living things all the way up the food chain, from plankton to humans; BPA and BPS disrupt embryonic development and are linked to heart disease and cancer; phthalates (such as the plasticizer DEHP) disturb gene expression; Even more disturbing, a groundbreaking study suggests serious adverse health problems may be passed down multiple generations Suggestion are given about how you can break your plastic addiction and reduce your own plastic footprint

Glass is heavy and increases transporation costs, and probably production costs as well. Healthier though. That's for sure.

Part 1 - sadly, there's more.

I've mentioned before that I've had a liver transplant.

The 25 years of exposure to primary processing chemicals, at heavy levels, brought on slow deterioration of liver function. Yes, I drank wine and beer also. The term used is/was "Chemically Induced Chirrohsis". Still sounds like you were a stumble bum drunk. Even though I was Plant Mgr. for 3 companies and then V.P. of Eng.&Mfg. for a German company before I about died. Only I know for sure.

Many folks will die from liver failure, will have birth defective kids, and derive cancers from these "Miracle Plastics" and never know what killed them.

We had one employee's new baby with "Hare Lip", another with a stunted arm.

Also, folks don't know that almost all plastics "OutGas" their Plasticizer chemicals constantly. Wonder what that 'film' is on your Windshield? And you don't Smoke?

So, whether you look at environmental or biological effects, our careless use of plastics has created a monster needing immediate attention.

I left that German company after 14 mo.

I work in the recycling business currently. I am always picking up recyclables that people throw out the window of the car, or pick it from the trash. Better to recycle it and use it again than to throw it out the window to clutter the landscape, or bury it in the dump where it is wasted and just fills up the dump faster.

ping Thanks for the heads up.

Sue and I have pretty much dumped plastic for food service at home.

Camping is tough and we use em for peanut butter etc.

Suppose it would not be imprudent to wash new plastic vessels in hot water before use, or would you caution not to use plastic even then?

TIA

I've often wondered that. So you are saying that is coming from the plastic in the car?

Yes. YES.

The vinyl clorides that liquify the polymers outgass over time, more when new of course.

And condense on the interior glass and grab all manner of dust pollen who knows what.

The very best way AFAIK to clean it is to hose it down with a glass cleaner, smear it all with a towel, spray again and squeegee.

And do it again, the crap is a mess, and it is good to see out of the windshield again.

Volkswagons are noticed for a paticularily nasty outgass.

I bet a lot of people here will remember VW's for a nasty plastic smell.

I want the chemical engineer above to vet my thoughts here.

I did not know that.

I had a '74 Super Beetle in the mid-80's but I don't remember a smell. My dad had a VW Mini-bus in the mid-70's and I don't remember a smell then either. They probably did and I just don't remember.

So that "new car smell" is outgass.

It is a pain in the ass. I was just bitching to my wife about it the other day as a matter of fact. It seems like I have to clean the inside windows every month. The funny thing is that I said, "I don't even smoke, where is this shit coming from?" What a coincidence. And now I know.

Don't. Their heater and defrost don't work worth a damn. It was fine for California, where we were living at the time, but when my dad was transferred to Illinois in the middle of winter, the trip was miserable. My dad had to get get several tuna cans and glue them on the dashboard next to the front windshield so he could put candles in them in order to help keep the windows defrosted. The rest of us were in the back bundled up under blankets.

Washing can't hurt, but I really don't believe it avoids the plasticizer absorption. These are extremely minute amounts that are outgassed over time, but the cumulative is, these days, significant.

The Studies done usually report on specific sources. Like baby bottles that are used maybe 4-5 hours a day, when the kid is exposed to other outgassing, accumlative, maybe 18-20 hrs. a day. Envission ALL of the plastic they're exposed to. But the damage I mentioned is primarily done pre-natal and genetically via the parents.

The primary sources of outgassing in your vehicles is all surfaces exposed to Ultra-Violet rays. Dashboards, Door panels, etc. I dealt with OSHA on the matter and a sympathetic, very knowledgable inspector told me the fedgov KNOWS the exposure levels are allowed too high. But he said the real choice was "kill/decrease the entire plastics industry". Not Economically Feasible.

Or, if you can get the right gloves, clean it with Acetone.

But watch out! That Stuff will Kill You!! :-)
