I use Firefox but need to install IE for one application. I keep installing and installing IE. I keep getting wrong version when I click run. I had IE 9 64 bit for Windows 7. Finally uninstalled that. I installed IE 9 32 bit for Windows 7.

I am legally blind. I know XP but Windows 7 has different locations and procedures.

How do I find out on 7 what version I have so what I download is compatible. I have been at this for 3 hours and am getting frustrated.

On any application, you can go to the Help button, normally the last button on the right, hit it, and it should tell you the build number of that application.

even though you have uninstalled a program or application there remains a registry entry which hang out and cause all kinds of mischief you must rid these little ether leaches from your machine. sure you could open regedit to do this but you need to know what you are looking for. the simple method is to use a program that seeks out orphan crap in the registry, and the answer is ccleaner a simple to use free tool for doing this and cleaning up all the other crap that builds up on computers.

If there is a question mark next to the Tools option at the top right of the screen, click on that and then click on the link for "About Internet Explorer".

I no longer have IE. That does not work in Firefox.

Is there something in Control Panel? It is so different than ZP that I cannot find anything.

Horse, go to your Start button and click onto it until your full menu pops up.

Next, click onto "Control Panel" and look for "System".

When you find find that file, click onto it and it should show you basic information about your computer such as what edition your computer has (like Windows 7 Home Premium), and what operating system it has (such as 32 bit operating system or 64).

If you are trying to install an application from IE that has a different operating system than yours, it may not be compatible.

I finally found out was better off downloading IE 10 to resolve my version problems of IE 9.

Sorry I don't really do windows. If you want to try switching over to Linux...

However, one thing you could do which is a half step less drastic than that is to install vmware for windows and inside that, run your familiar WinXP.

My understanding is that IE is part of the OS and is therefore impossible to remove from Windows even if you uninstall it. I uninstalled it on my Win 7 laptop yet it still shows its ugly face whenever I click on a link within an e-mail. There is no Internet Explorer folder anywhere on my computer and a search for iexplore.exe turns up nothing. I have no idea where it is coming from bit it is there.

Another time it appears is when a program has a problem and that window pops up asking me if I want to check for a solution. If it finds one it opens up IE instead of Firefox at a Microsoft webpage to display the problem and possible solution.

Maybe I'm confusing Linux with something else but seems I read something somewhere years ago about it involving a time-sharing arrangement among offline computers that worried me. Thanks for the vmware advice though, Pinguinite. And glad to hear your problem was resolved with an IE upgrade, Horse.

No, you read wrong. Linux is a very secure OS, much more so than Windows, which has so many holes in it that it really isn't too smart to have it connected to the internet without a firewall that blocks just about everything.

I've read good reviews about Linux here. Could have been an Urban Myth about the alleged time-sharing started by some competitor. I don't know -- was many years ago. Did you ever hear of any OS that had a time sharing arrangement with offline computers?

Now that I've thought about it more, it might have been an internet service provider that had some sort of time sharing arrangement. I was considering leaving AOL at the time. Sorry for the confusion.
