According to the Office of the Federal Register, the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) have filed a petition requesting the FDA amend the standard for identity for milk and 17 other dairy products to provide for the use of any safe and suitable sweetener as an optional ingredient.

Allow me to translate: Right now, the FDA allows the dairy industry to include sugar and high-fructose corn syrup in a number of its products. But these two very powerful organizations want the FDA to include aspartame as an official “nutritive sweetener,” claiming that by doing so, it would benefit school children.

Here's a snippet from the actual register:

IDFA and NMPF request their proposed amendments to the milk standard of identity to allow optional characterizing flavoring ingredients used in milk (e.g., chocolate flavoring added to milk) to be sweetened with any safe and suitable sweetener — including non-nutritive sweeteners such as aspartame. IDFA and NMPF state that the proposed amendments would promote more healthful eating practices and reduce childhood obesity by providing for lower-calorie flavored milk products. They state that lower-calorie flavored milk would particularly benefit school children who, according to IDFA and NMPF, are more inclined to drink flavored milk than unflavored milk at school.

As further support for the petition, IDFA and NMPF state that the proposed amendments would assist in meeting several initiatives aimed at improving the nutrition and health profile of food served in the nation's schools. Those initiatives include state-level programs designed to limit the quantity of sugar served to children during the school day. Finally, IDFA and NMPF argue that the proposed amendments to the milk standard of identity would promote honesty and fair dealing in the marketplace and are therefore appropriate under section 401 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

The proposed amendments would promote more healthful eating practices and reduce childhood obesity by providing for lower-calorie flavored milk products? Heaven forbid they put the kibosh on sugar milk and offer only local, unflavored milk...

The proposed amendments would assist in meeting several initiatives aimed at improving the nutrition and health profile of food served in the nation's schools? As opposed to, I don't know, just serving fresh, local foods with plenty of healthy options? How about instead of chicken nuggets and tater tots, we try some real baked chicken and real mashed potatoes?

The IDFA and NMPF argue the proposed amendments to the milk standard of identity would promote honesty and fair dealing in the marketplace, and are therefore appropriate under section 401 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Here's the problem with that whole “honesty” claim...

While the IDFA and NMPF want to put aspartame in your milk, they don't want you to know about it.

In the second to the last paragraph of the petition, you will find the following:

... the petitioners assert that consumers do not recognize milk — including flavored milk — as necessarily containing sugar. Accordingly, the petitioners state that milk flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners should be labeled as milk without further claims so that consumers can “more easily identify its overall nutritional value."

In other words, we don't want people to know that we're putting poison in their milk.

These guys are unreal.

And yet there's a very good chance this will get approved with little to no push back.

And for the record, more than 90 different health-related side effects have been associated with aspartame consumption — from anxiety and depression to seizures and, believe it or not, weight gain! According to a recent Yale study, products artificially sweetened with aspartame could increase the risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Brilliant!

Bottom line: The government says you can't drink milk in its purest form, the way God created it, but you can drink a toxic cocktail of chemicals that a bunch of lobbyists and politicians have decided is in your best interest.

The fact that I even have to write an article like this speaks volumes about how out of control our government has become.

The catch phrase of the above statement is "safe and suitable sweetener".

Aspartame (Nutrasweet) is none of these. "Nutrasweet" is otherwise known as "Nutradeath", since it has been shown to effect people's health adversely.

You know that pastuerized milk rots. It does not sour. This is because the pastuerization kills the beneficial bacteria. This bacteria is what is good for our digestion. This is also why we suffer from so many digestive disorders. ;)

True, pastuerization kills all bacteria, good and bad (if any) but then "good" bacteria are added to make buttermilk, yogurt.
