Wal-Mart shoppers will be able bypass the traditional checkout process at more than 200 stores with the Scan & Go app, but they still must pay the old-fashioned way.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said it is tripling the number of U.S. stores in a pilot program that lets shoppers scan items with their iPhones and pay at self-checkout counters.

Wal-Mart's Scan & Go program will soon be in more than 200 stores, up from about 70. The pilot began near its home office in Bentonville, Ark., in late 2012, then expanded to Atlanta.

While the program is tripling in size, for now it will be in only a small fraction of Wal-Mart's more than 4,000 U.S. stores.

Walmart expanding iPhone-based checkout

"We want our customer feedback to dictate the experience," Gibu Thomas, senior vice president of mobile and digital at Wal-Mart Global eCommerce, said this week. "You'll see this roll out to more markets."

For now, Scan & Go only works on Apple devices. An Android version should be out soon, Wal-Mart said.

With more than half of its shoppers using smartphones, Wal-Mart is trying to make shopping more convenient for shoppers who embrace mobile technology. More than half of the customers who have tried the Scan & Go feature have used it more than once, Thomas said.

Shoppers scan bar codes on items they want to buy, using the Wal-Mart app on their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to keep track of the planned purchases and the total cost. Then they pay at a self-checkout screen, bypassing the typical registers. As it expands the pilot test of Scan & Go, Wal-Mart is also adding self-checkout lanes to many more stores. Right now, about 1,500 stores have self-checkout lanes, and another 1,000 to 1,500 stores should get them this year, said Jeff McAllister, senior vice president of Wal-Mart U.S. Innovations.

DIGITAL COUPONS MAY BE COMING Wal-Mart is bringing Scan & Go to a dozen more markets: Denver; Phoenix; Omaha, Neb.; Dallas and Austin, Texas; Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Okla.; Wyoming; Bozeman, Mont.; Seattle; San Jose, Calif.; and Portland, Ore. Users can get an electronic receipt along with a paper one. Wal-Mart has hinted that digital coupons may be coming soon. Scan & Go users pay in the traditional way, not via apps on their devices. The company declined to comment further on mobile payment possibilities.

I was at the local Super-Walmart 2 days ago. Two cashiers open, 10 people in each line. Eight self check out lines with at least six persons in each line.

They opened one more cashier line after about 10 minutes.

Super Walmart, nothing but a Super Nightmare.

I avoid the ratrace by usually not shopping WalMart. I can generally meet or beat their prices elsewhere and I do not have to feel like I've dirtied myself by giving them my business.

Our SamsClub bakery has the best multi-grain ciabatta bread, baked in-store daily, at a third the cost of local grocers - so I keep my membership for that alone.

I go to the Grocery Outlet. One of the ones I frequent sells bread from a local all organic bakery at 1/3 the price of WholePaycheck.

Tell those guys to move some stores to CenTex - I've never heard of them.

They're beginning to get around. They're all up and down the West Coast now. Not as big as Trader Joe's but getting there. I know they are in Portland and there is about 5 of them in Seattle and they extend down into Kahlifornya where they started. I don't know how far EAST they've gotten. ;-)

Walmart

meet or beat their prices elsewhere

That day, a couple of days ago, I was looking for Pine-Sol, Mr. Clean or Spic and Span to do some spring cleaning.

The selection was next to nothing. All they had were 2 packs of Pine-Sol with a really high price, and that watered down Fabuloso. The Fabuloso was a 42 oz. bottle under a big special price tag of $3.97. The next day I saw a 48 oz. bottle at Family Dollar for $2.00.

Yes. WallyMart is only cheap on SOME things. Even then is it worth ethical anguish to save a few pennies knowing that you are supporting the enemy?

supporting the enemy?

On a cold winter day, I use the enemies free space to walk around and get in some exercise. I buy only real bargains and spend very little dough.

The local Super Walmart is just 5 blocks away.

It's easier for me as the nearest one is at least 5 miles. Target, not that there is a lot of difference, is about 3/4 of a mile away. Generally I avoid both, but then it is easier for me living in a big city (Seattle).

Is is true that there is no organized crime in Seattle, other than America's Biggest Street Gang, the American police in Seattle?

Someone once told me that organized gangsters don't like Seattle's wet weather, because their guns rust in that rainy climate.

Well it is true that people don't tan in the summer in Seattle - they rust.
