So I got my car (87 crn vic) put into the shop(xtian bros) tuesday morning. I had a hole in the lower left radiator. The reservoir also had a broken hose I wanted replaced.

They went with a new radiator. Cost me 449.cents...

The next day my transmission blew. Fluid gushed so much I thought it was my radiator again. If only.

So they towed it back to the shop (after I had it towed home 98 bucks)

Now the mechanic has taken the blame and said a new hose they put on split. Upon fixing that and test driving it was discovered the transmission is indeed burned out. He has found a man that will do the rebuild for 800 dollars. They are willing to get me a rental car in the mean time.

OR

He has offered me 1000 for vicky (thats her name) .

I love her but she is in bad bad shape. I was already looking at getting a new car. 1000 is not quite enough to reach that goal and all I really care about is having a running car. Something I don't have because of them.

So when I discuss this with them this morning I was wondering how to insist upon the 1000 dollars plus the botched repair (449) and towing cost back to my house(93 kept receipt) maybe just settle on an even 1500.

Just be strait forward about it?

Something about their modus operation isn't right. I think they're picking your pockets little by little. I knew a mechanic in Studio City, Ca who worked with mechanics around him and they made a living off of screwing customers in fixing their cars.

Since these guys are not going to be straight up about what they're doing, you should just make them the offer of the said $1000.00 in repair costs, towing costs, botched repair costs they incurred onto you. If they refuse these requests, I would file a formal complaint with the better business bureau. Better than that, take them to small claims court and sue them for those out of pocket expenses.

Take the $1000 (it's 3 times the real value) ... and lose the heartburn.

Get the new(er) car that you were thinking about.

We should all be livid. Stop acting like docile, mentally castrated pussies and grow a pair. It's time to get in their face. Why should we speak in hushed tones and act all polite when we are being raped every day?

Thats where I'm leaning... but I do want that 96 dollar tow fee.... They can cough that up... the real thought here is.... you know... that repair.....

It was their improper repair that caused this other much more expensive problem in the first place...

A car that I now will sell to him because of that botch..... I really hope he isn't resistant to the idea of 1500 because all that cars I am looking at are in that range... 2000 to 1200....

Noone222, you really think I should settle for the 1k rather than ask for the reimbursement of the repair too?

Something about their modus operation isn't right.

I think his head mechanic is a trying hard and some saving face is happening because someone didn't go with the best part or something.... Their were signs in my engine of...concern.

But The owner seems willing to try and make things right....

Our difference in ideas is only 500 bucks....

That should not be a big deal right?

About the same if he paid for the transmission rebuild and rental car and labor investment... in fact I think he'd still be getting off cheaper and me off better armed to buy the replacement car. ......

:'(

I'll miss vicky,

Edited for tact -Yaup

Yes, the error was theirs. They are willing to pay for the car (more than it's worth). What you want to buy really has little bearing on what their obligation should be.

If they'll go 1500 sure, take it. But if you had to go to court the outcome is uncertain, their offer might be withdrawn and the ACV (actual cash value) is likely 3-400 bucks.

Yeah.... That going to civil court and stuff .. nooooo.. I need a car tonight . Otherwise I'm gonna have a tough time saying I'm a pizza person. So, yeah,

I mean I'm out a few days work too. 1500 gets me a car tonight, I can have it insured by this afternoon and be road ready by this evening... and it stands at 1k.... I'm taking the money to the pawn shop and doing this the hard way,... Daddy needs a car.

Thanks for the advice yall...

7 am is here momentarily and I got a conversation to go have.

re: insurance

In Texas all policies are automatically extended for thirty days 'till all the paperwork can be re-worked

Getting 1500 would be sweet - good luck with it.

Thanks,.... After a lengthy procrastination and a short conversation the good fellow at the shop said reimbursing me for the 99$ tow would be no problem...just wanted to make sure I was 100% satisfied....

This is all over the phone see... I would much prefer to talk with him in person and I shall... Because all I really prefer is "running wheels" ,and "tonight". But the man is willing to go the length it seems.... which is good cause I need it.

I am surprised though.

They made a mistake. Owned up to it. Want to make it right. And want to make sure that it is indeed made right. .....

1000 gets me there. 1500 gets me there quick and easy and more assuredly.

Christian Brothers.

They are exceeding my wildest idea of an honorable mechanic and trying to make me their life time spokesman. LOL That last line is half satire,

trying to make me their life time spokesman

If you end up being satisfied with the results of this ordeal, you can always give them a good review on Yelp or another user review service. (Converse is also true).

Also, if Christian Bro's is an AAA recommended service center, they will mediate disputes between the business and the customer.

Thanks for this information - I had not a clue.

Vicky is 26 and not a collectible model. There's simply not a big market for well worn Crown Vics. The value is around 500 and the repair shop will take the new radiator out and resell it. You get your repair money back plus $500 which is about what she's worth. Take the money and run.

Are these guys capable of repairing Vicky for 500?

They've taken a lot of jack to give you an undriveable rig?

Take the money, I can't imagine anyone else foolish enough to offer a grand for an 87 civic.

Once a car reaches the point where you are having to put out large money to repair it and keep it running it is time to ditch it as it has turned into a black hole. Things will keep failing and you'll continue to put money into it at a rate that would make a new used vehicle look cheap.

If you can - look for an older Jetta with the little TDI Diesel. They're built like a Shick Brickhouse and get very good mileage when in proper tune.

You can't go wrong with a '61 Valiant with the 225ci slant-six with the Mopar Hyper-Pac kit.

87 civic.

87 Crown Vic.......but the sentiment remains. Plus, if Titor is out and about delivering pizza, a newer ride with better gas mileage should be easy to find.
