Greg Palast is a New York Times bestselling author and fearless investigative journalist whose reports appear on BBC Television Newsnight and in The Guardian. Palast eats the rich and spits them out. Catch his reports and films at www.GregPalast.com, where you can also securely send him your documents marked, "confidential".

Because it was marked "confidential" on each page, the oil industry stooge couldn't believe the US State Department had given me a complete copy of their secret plans for the oil fields of Iraq.

Actually, the State Department had done no such thing. But my line of bullshit had been so well-practiced and the set-up on my mark had so thoroughly established my fake identity, that I almost began to believe my own lies.

I closed in. I said I wanted to make sure she and I were working from the same State Department draft. Could she tell me the official name, date and number of pages? She did.

Bingo! I'd just beaten the Military-Petroleum Complex in a lying contest, so I had a right to be chuffed.

After phoning numbers from California to Kazakhstan to trick my mark, my next calls were to the State Department and Pentagon. Now that I had the specs on the scheme for Iraq's oil – that State and Defense Department swore, in writing, did not exist – I told them I'd appreciate their handing over a copy (no expurgations, please) or there would be a very embarrassing story on BBC Newsnight.

Within days, our chief of investigations, Ms Badpenny, delivered to my shack in the woods outside New York a 323-page, three-volume programme for Iraq's oil crafted by George Bush's State Department and petroleum insiders meeting secretly in Houston, Texas.

I cracked open the pile of paper – and I was blown away.

Like most lefty journalists, I assumed that George Bush and Tony Blair invaded Iraq to buy up its oil fields, cheap and at gun-point, and cart off the oil. We thought we knew the neo-cons true casus belli: Blood for oil.

But the truth in the Options for Iraqi Oil Industry was worse than "Blood for Oil". Much, much worse.

The key was in the flow chart on page 15, Iraq Oil Regime Timeline & Scenario Analysis:

"...A single state-owned company ...enhances a government's relationship with OPEC."

Palast does good work - thanks.

if oil was not scarce, they wouldnt be able to control oil supplies enough to jack the price up by a factor of five, would they?

the peak oil denialists are coming out of their closets in droves, attempting to jawbone the price down... too bad it's not having much effect...

i mean, it worked the first time, apparently, with the "jack discovery" hype, but not for much, not for long... the only thing that really worked was crashing the economy by selling phony securities, and that only worked for a couple years...

.

got to be a happy medium here, somewhere... gradual decline in production, gradual reduction of standard of living... without all the drama.

but the mama's boys, drama queens and adrenaline junkies cant bear a life without drama, can they?

and most important, whatever we do, we cant connect those dots between the AEI, PNAC, PNAC's need for a new pearl harbor, the neocons' infatuation with israel, peak oil, and 9/11.

So when is it going to be published?

palast's perfomance since 9/11 has been pretty comical...

the first time i remember him was on the ray taliaferro talk show on KGO, sanfrancisco...

very soon after 9/11, and he pointed out that PNAC had published this thing in september of 2000 that stated they needed a new pearl harbor... palast and taliaferro made a big deal out of that, being rabid democrats... the thrust of their arguments being, "get cheney and bush and rumsfeld".

that was the first i'd heard of PNAC, and this "new pearl harbor" business was astonishing, and that's one of the things that drove me to the internet... i had to verify that palast was telling the truth...

well, he was... but the comedy comes when you dig into PNAC a little farther, and find out that the whole operation was spawned by jewish neocons who apparently have a strong attachment to israel...

poor ol' palast has spent the rest of his career, since 9/11, trying to cover his tracks on PNAC, israel, peak oil, and 9/11.

too late, greg, the cat's out of the bag

The invasion was not about "blood for oil", but something far more sinister: blood for no oil. War to keep supply tight and send prices skyward.

Palast is years and years late in making that determination, which is still an aspect of blood for oil control. He should've caught a clue from all the unthwarted sabotage of oil infrastructures. Even though it's not really breaking news for others as it seems to be for him, it is notable that he claims to be in possession of actual evidence but presented nothing of the sort -- just a pic that slammed "conspiracy nuts" and his testimony that "The key was in the flow chart on page 15, Iraq Oil Regime Timeline & Scenario Analysis" of records delivered to him by his "chief of investigations".
