That's a great video, Lod. I applaud that man for sticking it to that cop. In Oct of 2000, I was riding my bike home from work one afternoon when a cop pulled me over and wanted to cite me for wearing earphones. I was listening to my walkman as a means to deter driverby harassers. Anyways, this cop demanded identification. I told him I had none. He told me to sign the ticket or else he was going to take me jail. So guess what I did to that ticket, I signed it, "I am signing this ticket under duress and I do not waive any of my constitutional rights." He looked at the ticket, gave me my portion and took off. A few weeks later, I showed up in court to contest this damn ticket and explained to the judge why I had my headphones on. The cop who pulled me over was present. The judge dismissed the ticket charge. I guess the cop lost his commission for that one. :(

In California, tickets like these are called "Infractions" which help generate revenue for the city of L.A. All of this shit happens in Malibu at these speed traps along the way.

Where are the speed traps around Malibu?

Coming from the Valley (North from Malibu) just as you pass Pepperdine University on the way over to Ralph's market heading towards PCH.

Muholland Highway and Las Virgenes Road (in this area)

Malibu Canyon Road and Civic Center Way (and this area)

My friend and I often would get stopped by a cop because they would assume he was speeding when there was no traffic light or speed limit posted. In fact, many people have complained about those speed traps. The cops hide in some area that prevents them from being seen by motorists. They are not supposed to be hiding but are supposed to be in plain view.

"Where are the speed traps....?"

"Mulholland Highway and Las Virgenes.....Malibu Canyon Road and Civic Center Way...."

Thanks for that, especially about the one near Mulholland and Las Virgenes. We spend a lot of time between Mulholland and PCH because there are hundreds of miles of hiking trails there. Coming from the Valley, they're usually accessed via Topanga or Malibu Cyn. Ordinarily, we don't need to drive by Ralph's, but my roommate takes her recycling junk there.

I don't know if you remember the place or not, but at the top of Topanga, at the place that more or less separates Topanga Cyn from the Valley, there's a scenic overlook. In the olden days it was just a remote, flat dirt area where people could dump bodies over the side and kids went to make out in their cars. Now there's a paved parking lot, landscaping and a hidden camera there. If you don't make a complete stop before you pull out of the parking lot to get back on Topanga, they'll send you a ticket in the mail. It's probably a great source of revenue because nobody is expecting that way out there.

You're welcome. I am well familiar with Topanga Canyon Road. Or rather, its Old Topanga Canyon Road. I used to travel along that way to the restaurant "Inn of Seven Rays". Such a beautiful restaurant. This place and The Castaway restaurant in Burbank and Musso and Franks restaurant in Hollywood were my favorites.

Just be especially on guard of those parking lots, driveways, because that's where those cops like to hide. What they are going is against the law. They need to be seen in plain view. Especially when they have their radar guns on every car that passes by them. When my friend got ticketed by the cops, it amounted to $120.00. He was furious and contested that ticket in Malibu court with an affidavit explaining why he felt the cop was wrong. My buddy prevailed because a number of people have complained about those areas in question.
