A fisherman has been bitten to death by a beaver after trying to take its photograph.
The man was on a fishing trip at Lake Shestakov in Belarus with two friends when they spotted the animal on the side of the road.
He stopped so that he could take a picture but as he approached the beaver it pounced on him, biting him in the thigh.
His friends attempted to stem the flow of blood from the wound but the animal’s bite had severed a main artery and the man, who came from Brest, bled to death.
Beaver attacks are rare and according to experts those animals that do go for humans are usually rabid.

Huh! who knew?

All my beaver-bites have been most pleasant.

This is why I need an entire garage full of prepared peanut-butter snack crackers.

A study group recently released its findings as to the best presidents of the United States of America.

Obama has been rated as the 4th best president ever:

Reagan and 9 others tied for first, 15 presidents tied for second, 18 tied for third, and Obama came in fourth.

Beavers den with the younguns for up to five years, and their strength, skills and smarts are considerable. A Papa beaver is not only territorial, but they have the ass to turn the wrench if a trespasser won't leave quickly.

Having said that, my friend was the senior agent for fish & wildlife for my state, and his assigned task before retiring was problem beaver management. When he learned that the state was no longer going to monitor his titer levels or pay for his rabies boosters as needed, he was upset.

I made inquiry on his behalf and I found that the data now shows that wildlife agents and other outdoorsmen (and women) who usually got regular rabies shots (based on their titer levels) were, statistically speaking, at greater risk from the shots than from rabid animals. If they're bitten they can still be treated, but the compiled data revealed that regular rabies boosters bring unacceptable risks, which in bureau-speak means that more people are injured, permanently disabled or even killed by inoculations than from animal bites.

Because of my "history" I was the right person to explain this to my friend. I understood and agreed with the state's decision to refrain from regular rabies shots for their outdoor workers. (The division's wildlife section administrator wasn't proud of the new stats, but he explained it to me because the senior agent knew how to draw attention when he was unhappy, as did I. And some of the guys looked to me for help on occasion. It wasn't just a cost cutting measure. In fact they believed it was cheap insurance for people they had invested substantial funds in, before the data came back around and ass bit them)

The case was made when the agent learned that just because he'd never had an adverse reaction in the past there was no guarantee that the next shot wouldn't make his wedding tackle fall off or sumthin'. And if bitten he could be treated with high confidence of success. (The series of shots after a rabies bite are most unpleasant but necessary)

By the way, have you ever seen the world's largest beaver dam, in Alberta Canada? It was discovered on GOOGLE EARTH in 2007, using NASA satellite imagery from 1990. It's estimated to have taken 20 years to build!

Here's another look at the half mile long dam.
