The birth of the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler has been celebrated by Google with the publishing of an interactive Google doodle.

Euler was arguably the most important mathematician of the 18th century and one of the greatest of all time. He introduced most modern mathematical terminology and notation and was also renowned for his work in mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, and astronomy.

Euler was born in Basel on 15 April 1707. He was tutored by Johann Bernoulli, a family friend who was also Europe's leading mathematician. When Euler's father tried to make him become a pastor, Bernoulli persuaded him that his son had the potential to be a great mathematician.

He travelled to Russia, where he prospered until foreign intellectuals became unpopular and he moved to Berlin. When Catherine the Great succeeded to the throne, Euler returned to Russia, where he died in 1783.

That banner spooked me a little, and I'm skeptical of most conspiracy related stories.

Except for the google logo it would make for a cool wall hanging, maybe just glued to a big cork-looking board or something. (1 image)

Damn - what a ton of other horrible stories there.

Hurl inducing crap.

I do a little bit of 3d modeling with Blender. Blender uses Euler formulas to calculate simple rotations of objects in 3d space.

That drawing that takes place of the second "O" in "google" is a fairly good representation of X,Y,Z Euler rotation... or maybe its the Illuminati symbol for imminent apocalypse.

I sometimes confuse the two. :)

Either way, it would have made a trippy backdrop for the Jefferson Airplane Pink Floyds.

Damn.

Thanks for joining up here - I have no clue what that means, but, I'm glad you're here with your knowledge.

Sorry for geeking out there.

I just meant that Euler came up with some of the math that lets computer programs do animations and simulations.

Looks something like a gyroscope [Edit to add: or an atom]. I thought this info about him at Wikipedia was interesting:

There is a famous legend,[43] inspired by Euler's arguments with secular philosophers over religion, which is set during Euler's second stint at the St. Petersburg academy. The French philosopher Denis Diderot was visiting Russia on Catherine the Great's invitation. However, the Empress was alarmed that the philosopher's atheism was influencing members of her court, and so Euler was asked to confront the Frenchman. Diderot was later informed that a learned mathematician had produced a proof of the existence of God: he agreed to view the proof as it was presented in court. Diderot, to whom all mathematics was supposedly gibberish (this is clearly not true, as Diderot himself did research in mathematics[44]), would stand dumbstruck

That's a cool story. Wish he had been able to settle the matter with an equation.

I'm not that much of a math wizard. I recognized his name and the symbol from here.

Glad you like it. He might have used an equation. If I find any more info about it, I'll post it here when I can.
