The interesting thing, to me, here is that both men in the first of the paired photos appear to be listening to something through their ear pieces. The expression is not that of someone listening to music it is actually rather rapt and serious - like someone receiving orders. From that I infer that they were likely receiving radio communication from someone. Possibly that someone was coordinating events.
