And by controlling the media they can keep all of the contradictory information from broad public dissemination.
The Internet is still a subset of people who follow "the news". As long as the media is controlled the controllers can paint ANY contradictory information, regardless of how sound, as a (((shudder))) "conspiracy theory". Once they do that then the government can plausibly pretend it doesn't exist and anyone who brings it up will be blackballed or shouted down.
