Here's a fact that will stop baby boomers in their tracks...

According the Alzheimer's Association, 33% (1 in 3) of seniors will die with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia.

As medical advances extend the life of the average person, fewer people are succumbing to things like cancer and heart attacks, and they're living to the age (about 65 to 85 years) when Alzheimer's starts to rear its ugly head.

However, research suggests there may be several things you can do to reduce your risk of developing Alzheimer's and dementia...

"Although Alzheimer's disease currently has no cure, recent research results point toward a day when it might be possible to delay, slow down, or even prevent this devastating brain disorder." — National Institutes of Health

Today I'll cover the most relevant recent research and show you how you can easily implement these findings into your daily life to help reduce your risk of developing this life-altering illness.

1) Go low carb in your diet. One of the strongest linked associations with Alzheimer’s is what's known as metabolic syndrome, a cluster of diseases including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease caused by changes in metabolism. People who are obese in their middle age are 4x more likely to get Alzheimer’s, while those with diabetes are twice as likely, compared to the average population. Recent research is even starting to suggest that Alzheimer's may be a form of diabetes in the brain.

The primary cause of diabetes and obesity (and hence, possibly Alzheimer's) is an insulin resistance that occurs due to the over consumption of carbohydrates (especially refined carbohydrates) coupled with a lack of exercise to utilize them. Studies have already shown that these high-carb diets are not just linked to metabolic syndrome, but Alzheimer's as well.

The solution, then, is to limit your carbohydrate intake strictly to fruits and vegetables — and increase your intake of healthy fats and proteins. There are several effective low carb diets out there; choosing one is a matter of deciding which one you'll be able to stick with. Advertisement

It starts with cold hands, leg cramps and unsightly circles under your eyes...

But one world renowned physician has discovered a 'triple threat' to disarm this health minefield before it blows.

2) Reduce stress. I've touched on this topic before. Stress increases your levels of a hormone called cortisol. Chronic elevated cortisol levels can cause shrinking of the part of your brain responsible for memory formation. One of the key indicators of Alzheimer's happens to be the shrinkage of that same area of the brain. Whether stress actually causes Alzheimer's is still in question, but it's still probably worth your while to keep this brain shrinking from happening. You can find a list of 10 de-stressing techniques right here.

3) Get regular exercise. The mechanics behind this one are not well understood — but mounting evidence suggests exercise can help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's. The theory is exercise increases blood flow into the brain as well as nerve connections in the brain, both of which are severely damaged in Alzheimer's disease. Increasing both of these through exercise may help prevent damage to the brain's neurons, one of the hallmark symptoms of the disease.

You don't need to take up Olympic weight lifting or marathon running to get the brain benefits of exercise... Simply walking for at least 30 minutes a day will get your blood pumping to the brain and help develop those brain cell connections.

4) Mental stimulation. I'm sure you've read about this one before...

According to the NIH: "One large observational study looked at the impact of ordinary activities like listening to the radio, reading newspapers, playing puzzle games, and visiting museums. Investigators asked more than 700 older nuns, priests, and religious brothers to describe the amount of time they spent doing these activities. After 4 years, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease was 47 percent lower, on average, for those who did the activities most often than for those who did them least frequently."

Stimulating your brain has similar results as exercise: It helps increase both blood flow and neuron connections. There are hundreds of programs online to choose from in addition to the crossword puzzles and Sudoku you can find in your daily newspaper, or the brain teasers you can find at your local bookstore. Continuing your education helps, too. Consider taking a class to learn something new (it could be anything from cooking to a new language to knitting), which will increase the healthy connections of your brain cells. Advertisement

The Natural Way to Magnify Memory Power Overnight

First it starts with "misplaced" car keys...

Then you forget your anniversary. Soon even your friend's name is giving you trouble...

Memory problems are an unfortunate part of life for most people.

But now thanks to cutting edge neurological research, mental decline can be a thing of the past.

Scientists have discovered unique biological compounds that can improve mental performance, ward off Alzheimer's, and even make you 19% smarter overnight.

5) Supplements. You'll see many snake oil salesmen toting memory-enhancing and Alzheimer's-preventing herbs and other concoctions. But use caution... Most of these supplements have no scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness in Alzheimer's prevention. This includes Vitamin E, vitamin C, B vitamins, ginkgo biloba, and coenzyme Q-10.

However, there are two supplements that do appear to help:

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS (EFAs), &, ,WHY DO WE NEED TO TAKE OMEGA-3 EFAs?Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are polyunsaturated fats that our bodies need but cannot produce. Therefore, they must be consumed through food or supplements. There are two families of EFAs: omega-3 and omega-6, which need to be consumed in a balanced ratio. The body must receive a balanced supply of omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs to ensure proper eicosanoids production. Eicosanoids are hormone-like compounds that affect virtually every system in the body&mdash, they regulate pain and inflammation, help maintain proper blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and promote fluid nerve transmission. The problem is that, in our modern industrialized food system, omega-3s have become largely absent from the food chain while omega-6s have become overabundant. Even the healthiest diets contain too many omega-6s and not enough omega-3s. Decades of scientific evidence indicates that this EFA imbalance can contribute to chronic inflammation and a variety of chronic health issues. The most beneficial omega-3s that we&rsquo,re missing are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Purified fish oil is the best direct source of EPA and DHA.2. DHA is found primarily in fatty coldwater fish: tuna, salmon, anchovies, herring, and sardines are a few with the highest levels. In animal studies, this fatty acid has been found to reduce the amount of brain-strangling protein that's a primary symptom of Alzheimer's disease.

From the NIH report on DHA and Alzheimer's: "Although a clinical trial of DHA showed no impact on people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, it is possible that DHA supplements could be effective if started before cognitive symptoms appear."

Human observational studies have found a link between moderate red wine consumption and a lower incidence of Alzheimer's development, and animal studies have found similar reductive effects on the brain-strangling proteins as DHA. (And if you're not a fish lover or red wine drinker, you can find both

6) Quit smoking. Add another benefit to the list when you quit smoking: A study conducted by health care giant Kaiser Permanente found "heavy smoking in midlife more than doubles your odds of developing Alzheimer's disease."

There are about as many quit-smoking techniques and programs as their are people: nicotine gum, hypnotists, support groups — again, the one that works for you will be the one that you can stick with.

Omega 3 - Krill Oil. And avoid the statin drugs like the plague that they are. They will destroy your mind and body.

Amen to that. I had a major and a minor heart attack last year and the Dr. put me on a Statin - which I give lip service to and once I had read up on them it remains in the cabinet, and for some reason I never run out. Statins also block the body's production of Coenzyme Q-10 and can lead to heart failure and death. Just what I need - I already suffer from heart failure so I should take a drug that causes heart failure. Ain't gonna' happen.

I hope you are doing well now. Good for you in avoiding the statins. They are crippling, disabling and killing drugs.

Eat plenty of fresh clean fish, much better option than pills. Studies have already shown those omega 3 pills don't help.

God is always good!
