Title: Sen. Manchin: Background Checks “Expand Second Amendment”

Democrat Senator Joe Manchin is trying to get another background check bill through the Senate following last month’s defeat of a bill he introduced with Republican Senator Patrick Toomey.

“I truly believe the background check bill is possible to get passed,” Manchin told CBS News on Tuesday.

He also tried to sell the idea that laws restricting and regulating the Second Amendment actually expand it. Manchin said it is the job of Democrats in Congress to educate Americans who exercise the right to own firearms about this new interpretation of the Second Amendment.

“We are going to have to make some adjustments to it and find out where the comfort zone is, but what we need to do really is educate the law-abiding gun owners like myself, people that might belong to the NRA or other gun organizations that don’t believe this is a threat to their Second Amendment. This bill, not only protects your Second Amendment, it expands your Second Amendment,” Manchin told CBS This Morning.

“We had some people who were concerned that it would infringe on inter-family transfers, but it doesn’t at all,” he said. “We are going to clarify that language and anytime that you transfer to family — whether it is directly or online –it will be basically not subjected to the background check because that is a person transaction with a family member.”

Manchin’s government-run universal background system is designed to shut down gun shows and restrict commercial sales of firearms. It has little to do with Uncle Harry selling a shotgun to his nephew. It is about the government knowing how many firearms you own and where they are so they can be confiscated.

“Some of the proposals, like for example – universal background checks – would allow the federal government to surveil law-abiding citizens who exercise their Constitutional rights,” Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah, said from the Senate floor last month. “One of the provisions we expect to see in the bill based on what we saw in the Judiciary Committee – on which I sit – would allow the Attorney General of the United States (Eric Holder) to promulgate regulations that could lead to a national registry system for guns.”

Manchin is being reasonable and is attentive to the terms of the Constitution.

The Second Amendment says its goal is "a well-regulated militia". Article I, section 8, clause 16 says that it is CONGRESS that provides for the organizing, arming and disciplining that militia.

Orwellian doublespeak at it's finest.

No it isn't.

Congress has nothing to do with "organizing, arming and disciplining" the militia.

"Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom? Congress shall have no power to disarm the militia.

Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birth-right of an American ... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the People. — Tench Coxe, 1788.

FAIL!! The Second Amendment is an individual right that restricts FedGov from interfering with an individuals' firearm ownership. Your twisted interpretation of the 2A shows a complete lack of common-sense understanding about the Bill of Rights.

“With the exception of Whites, the rule among the peoples of the world, whether residing in their homelands or settled in Western democracies, is ethnocentrism and moral particularism: they stick together and good means what is good for their ethnic group."

No, Manchin, like most of his ilk (politicians) is being a liar and disingenuous. He knows you don't strengthen anything by weakening it and compromising it. Just another lying bastard in Washington.

Americans who have no experience with, or knowledge of, tyranny believe that only terrorists will experience the unchecked power of the state. They will believe this until it happens to them, or their children, or their friends.

His salary should not be billed to us for the time he's spent pushing again to infringe the 2nd Amendment when those police state measures were already rejected as over-reaching abuse of power.

I’ve often read the comments of the “regulars” on this site and many others so I will address my comment to you and the author of this site. It appears to me your understanding of our rights and liberties is somewhat limited. Why do I say that? Because I am a convicted felon and I constantly hear everyone rant that only criminals and convicted felons should not have guns. I beg to differ.

There was a time in this country when the only criminals were those who were behind bars. Once a person had paid their debt to society then all stigma of criminality was gone and all rights were restored. Just watch any old western and you will understand when you see the sheriff letting the bad guy out of jail and taking his six shooter out of the bottom drawer of his desk and handing it back to him. That is because we have a constitutional right that prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. In other words you can not be [permanently] and forever cut off from your basic right to self defense in perpetuity. Or to be put another way. You cannot be [punished] your [entire life] for an otherwise petty event. (such as growing a marijuana plant) That was almost thirty years ago for me. The prohibition against felons with guns is a relatively new event (sometime in the sixties) and is completely unconstitutional on more than one front.

Today the reason the left feels compelled and righteous about banning you from your guns is because you have allowed them (without a fight) to ban me from mine. Unlike you, I will defend your right to your guns with my life at the appropriate time. Felon or not. So give this some [thought] and I pray you will [see] that a small infringement [leads to] the one you are facing today. And don’t give up. Maybe we can turn it around for all of us.
