There is a good chance that your mother, a doctor or at least Tony the Tiger has at some point in time told you that breakfast is the most important meal of the day…and the truth is they’re all right. That’s because recent research from a nutritional and exercise physiologist reveals that a person who consumes a morning meal that is loaded with protein can keep their appetite under control for the rest of the day including decreasing the amount of sugary or high-fat snacks that evening. Given the fact that up to 60% of young adults skip breakfast, this simple change in eating habits could have a major impact on reducing the waistlines of approximately 28 million overweight people in North America alone. In this study, participants who ate a high-protein (35 grams) breakfast of eggs and lean beef were compared to groups who ate either an average protein meal or packaged cereal. Despite the fact that all three meals were matched for caloric intake, the folks who chowed down on the eggs and beef were satisfied for a longer period of time and this was further demonstrated on a functional MRI machine that recorded less stimulation in the region of the brain that is responsible for food cravings. If a person is averse to eating a beef burrito in the morning, substitutes such as Greek Yogurt, cottage cheese or even pork loin would also do the trick as long as they provided up to 35 grams of protein. This explains why most patients who seek the assistance of a nutritionist for development of a weight loss plan are frequently surprised when the expert suggests eating more often and on schedule.
