Here's how President Eisenhower responded to a letter asking why he kept a portrait of Robert E. Lee in his office:

August 9, 1960

Dear Dr. Scott:

Respecting your August 1 inquiry calling attention to my often expressed admiration for General Robert E. Lee, I would say, first, that we need to understand that at the time of the War Between the States the issue of Secession had remained unresolved for more than 70 years. Men of probity, character, public standing and unquestioned loyalty, both North and South, had disagreed over this issue as a matter of principle from the day our Constitution was adopted.

General Robert E. Lee was, in my estimation, one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation. He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America; he was thoughtful yet demanding of his officers and men, forbearing with captured enemies but ingenious, unrelenting and personally courageous in battle, and never disheartened by a reverse or obstacle. Through all his many trials, he remained selfless almost to a fault and unfailing in his belief in God. Taken altogether, he was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history.

From deep conviction I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee’s caliber would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the nation’s wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.

Such are the reasons that I proudly display the picture of this great American on my office wall.

Sincerely,

Dwight D. Eisenhower

In contrast, David Frum calls Lee and all other Confederate generals "traitors," a dazzling display of historical and constitutional ignorance, as well as contempt for the region and culture whose military traditions have been the bedrock of this country's military.

But then, Eisenhower was a real man, while Frum is a moon-faced chickenhawk.

Cadet Robert E. Lee was among the very few to complete training at West Point without a single demerit.

Robert E. Lee, if only he had flanked the Union troops at Gettysburg, rather than charge headlong.

If you find yourself with an hour to kill, the above link will take u to a documentary about West Point, class of '67. I really enjoyed it.

The war could have ended in three days, or fewer.

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken

Yep, very possible. Lee would have made a beeline to DeeCee, while Grant would have taken an unguarded Richmond. DC was the bigger prize. Lee knew this would have been Grant's move and said it would have been like trading Kings in chess, with him (Lee) gaining the larger piece.

Robert E. Lee, if only he had flanked the Union troops at Gettysburg, rather than charge headlong.

The 20th Maine led by Col. Joshua Chamberlain successfully defended Little Round Top with a hairy chested downhill bayonet charge (with mostly empty rifles) and in so doing they caught The 15th Alabama with their kimonos down.

I've been to Gettysburg several times, and at the foot of Little Round Top I sat in The Slaughter Pen at O-Dark Thirty each time, whispering to those Reb boys who fell there, never to see their beloved South again. I was so overcome that I wept, sharing their anxiety and grief as they died.

Those losses at the extreme left end of the Union flank would have rendered any further attack a serious tactical blunder, isolating any Rebs from their line of scrimmage.
