By Barton Gellman and Laura Poitras, Thursday, June 6, 4:43 PM E-mail the writer

The National Security Agency and the FBI are tapping directly into the central servers of nine leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting audio, video, photographs, e-mails, documents and connection logs that enable analysts to track a person’s movements and contacts over time.

The highly classified program, code-named PRISM, has not been disclosed publicly before. Its establishment in 2007 and six years of exponential growth took place beneath the surface of a roiling debate over the boundaries of surveillance and privacy. Even late last year, when critics of the foreign intelligence statute argued for changes, the only members of Congress who knew about PRISM were bound by oaths of office to hold their tongues.

An internal presentation on the Silicon Valley operation, intended for senior analysts in the NSA’s Signals Intelligence Directorate, described the new tool as the most prolific contributor to the President’s Daily Brief, which cited PRISM data in 1,477 articles last year. According to the briefing slides, obtained by The Washington Post, “NSA reporting increasingly relies on PRISM” as its leading source of raw material, accounting for nearly 1 in 7 intelligence reports.

That is a remarkable figure in an agency that measures annual intake in the trillions of communications. It is all the more striking because the NSA, whose lawful mission is foreign intelligence, is reaching deep inside the machinery of American companies that host hundreds of millions of American-held accounts on American soil.

The technology companies, which participate knowingly in PRISM operations, include most of the dominant global players of Silicon Valley. They are listed on a roster that bears their logos in order of entry into the program: “Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple.” PalTalk, although much smaller, has hosted significant traffic during the Arab Spring and in the ongoing Syrian civil war.

Dropbox , the cloud storage and synchronization service, is described as “coming soon.”

Government officials declined to comment for this article.

Roots in the ’70s

PRISM is an heir, in one sense, to a history of intelligence alliances with as many as 100 trusted U.S. companies since the 1970s. The NSA calls these Special Source Operations, and PRISM falls under that rubric.

The Silicon Valley operation works alongside a parallel program, code-named BLARNEY, that gathers up “metadata” — address packets, device signatures and the like — as it streams past choke points along the backbone of the Internet. BLARNEY’s top-secret program summary, set down alongside a cartoon insignia of a shamrock and a leprechaun hat, describes it as “an ongoing collection program that leverages IC [intelligence community] and commercial partnerships to gain access and exploit foreign intelligence obtained from global networks.”

But the PRISM program appears more nearly to resemble the most controversial of the warrantless surveillance orders issued by President George W. Bush after the al-Qaeda attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Its history, in which President Obama presided over “exponential growth” in a program that candidate Obama criticized, shows how fundamentally surveillance law and practice have shifted away from individual suspicion in favor of systematic, mass collection techniques.

I like seeing these things being reported in the MSM. Better late than never.

Right now at the NSA they're saying "Gee, so many people post on both the Freedom4um AND on the NAMBLA website!"

You lost me.

What the exact fuck is the NSA doing snooping on us at all?

THey're doing it to everyone.

Maybe you can ask your buddy that worked on these programs (that you admitted to a while back) what the fuck they're up to and why. He trusted you enough to tell you about it.

The only reason for them to spy on their own people is because they are afraid of their own people. Why are they afraid? This has nothing to do with terrorism, and your "friend" and/or you are a part of it.

Fuck the NSA. If I found out they were all about to be killed, I wouldn't say a fucking word. You tell your cocksucking friend I said that. Maybe he can track me down.

"I don't know if the IRS, specifically, is reading your email but I do know that some federal agency - maybe the FBI, maybe the NSA or DHS, maybe something else - has a sort of internet search bot in place that looks, automatically, for certain trigger words in messages, and refers such messages to be read and analyzed. Someone I know played a part in working up that programming. "

Maybe you can ask your buddy ....

I am not sure if you addressed that at me, but I had mentioned that I knew someone who was working on a big computer program by which the Pentagon sifted through phone calls (IIRC, trans-oceanic or at least long-distance) mining for certain key words and, if it heard any, it was supposed to bring it to the attention of some US intelligence person for further eavesdropping.

He wrote that program some years ago - I think before email was a big deal - and under the circumstances he is no longer working on that project, now in a different job in another city, so he has no way of finding out what they did with his computer program. I would assume that, with new communications technology, such as cellphones and smartphones, they worked up something even more elaborate to the let the feds know when someone was talking terrorist-type plotting.

There are real terrorists out there, as we understand the definition and tactics of terrorists, because we manufactured them. But the government has another definition of the word. They define it as everyone in the US. Otherwise they wouldn't make these blanket demands by spying on everyone. Does anyone really think that this is limited to what's been exposed so far? Is anyone out there that stupid?

There are the times they really screwed the pooch and let it slip that they really do consider us to be the terrorists. Remember the MIAC report? Or remember those that had "suspicious constitution relater materials" in their cars that the pigs didn't like? There's more, but why rehash everything.

I'm glad though. I thought bush was bad with the number of scandals. But the HNIC has taken it to a whole new level. And the MSM is finally starting to do their job and cover all these scandals.

I wonder if this is the tipping point? The more the scandals make the news, the more support they lose. Then there's waiting for the other shoe to drop when it comes to the markets.

The government is preparing for it. IMHO that is what this is all about.

I think they are planning for something else as well - I'm just not sure what it is. It could be the overdue super solar flare, an impending asteroid or comet collision or what? However, I do think there is something. It is the illusion of geologic stability that has people lulled into a false sense of security. If there is one thing the geologic record teaches is that there have been multiple events in the past which have caused MAJOR extinctions and a couple came close to wiping out life on this planet. I am just guessing, but I think they think we have one on the short horizon.

I'm just not sure what it is.

Same here.

It might be general contingency preparations. Or they know we're closer to economic collapse than anyone else knows. Not sure they can keep that secret though.

When the USSR broke up, it happened fast. And they don't have the race problems we do.

DUDE, I look at your post to OI and I read all that jazz about russians having no race issues and I think ... How can you know that? You are not russian. You have no way of knowing and you obviously pay no mind to their issues.......because they do have race issues... more sever issues than us in fact... but not as bad as the jews....

Anyways... yeah, you spout conspiracy and fear la raza....

and call me the nutter with the gov snoops listening to every word we write.

I told you to do something sooner.

I been telling you people for years to get up, go to city council meetings stop trusting the voting process to get more active....

What did you do aside from dreaming up cleaver labels to assign people like me?

Enjoy your tyranny.

You are not russian. You have no way of knowing

I'm not Russian, but that doesn't mean I have no way of knowing. Russia / FSU has very few blacks.

You can look up the demographics, or you can do it the fun way and use google earth street view and drive around. Many of the larger cities are mapped so you can do this. Or do both, like I did.

Not only will you see hot women everywhere (in high heels, no less), you won't see blacks.

" What did you do aside from dreaming up cleaver labels to assign people like me? "

What else can I call someone that thinks fake blood and fake limbs and fake injured were used in boston? I'm not going to say that's brilliant. But this is a different topic, and I have yet to call you a nutter.
