Title: Leaker of NSA program: ‘I can’t in good conscience allow the US government to destroy privacy’

A British newspaper Sunday revealed the source of the leak revealing the NSA’s extensive surveillance of US communications.

Edward Snowden, a former CIA technical assistant who now works for a defense contractor with ties to the National Security Agency, asked the Guardian newspaper to reveal his identity.

“I have no intention of hiding who I am because I know I have done nothing wrong,” he told the newspaper in a remarkable, rambling interview that touched on his reasons for the leak, how he took precautions in not revealing documents that could harm particular people, how he became disillusioned, and how he expects his life as he knows it to end. “I don’t want the story to be about me. I want it to be about what the US government is doing.”

“I’m willing to sacrifice all of that because I can’t in good conscience allow the US government to destroy privacy, Internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they’re secretly building.”

The Guardian first disclosed that the NSA has been collecting cellphone metadata — time of calls, their length, their destination, but not the contents of the conversation — for many business calls within the United States and from the United States to foreign countries. Since the disclosure, President Obama and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper have acknowledged the program, saying it is an essential tool for revealing possible patterns that could lead to discovering terrorism plots. They said the program was overseen by a secret spy court.

“My sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them.” said Snowden, who added that he has been holed up in a hotel room in Hong Kong and hopes to receive asylum, possibly from Iceland.

Thank you, patriot.

To hell with the U.S. government, it's time for everybody to spill anything that they thought should not be disclosed. After the IRS scandals, Benghazi, and the evidently enormous amount of corruption in the Oval Orifice and Congress that goes back decades, it's time. The citizenry are supposed to keep their mouths shut and file tax returns faithfully each year only to be treated like garbage? To hell with that notion. I'll start spilling some interesting 'stuff' in another week.

I'd say that is the understatement of this decade. Hopefully as he stated he has enough information to keep him out of harms way. It would seem to be a risky proposition to hire an intelligent, principled man to perpetrate the the acts our government considers business as usual. I wish him well and can only hope that the damage he has done is enough to wake some of the dumb asses that call themselves Americans. Though my nature does not lead me to be optimistic.

The problem that our would-be tyrants face though is that there are likely to be other courageous individuals who value liberty and the welfare of all enough to take the plunge and willingly sacrifice themselves to do what is right. And that is a lot of courage. The Tyrants Who Would Be (TWWB) do not understand that viewpoint and I am sure that it scares them.

Of course the apathy of the Baaing herd of Sheeple aids the TWWB but the Sheeple are so dumbed down and Psychologically cowed and controlled that they just gaze fixedly in to the Boob Toob - until the day that they are rounded up and declared unnecessary excess population. It is up to the Sheep Dogs, such as this brave young man, to protect them from their own passivity.

Yes.

I think it's time to pile it on. It's not just people like us that are pissed. It's pretty much everyone. I can see that in the article comment sections.

They really stepped in it this time.

People understand their own personal privacy. Before, it didn't personally affect them, but now it does. IMO that is the key.

Instead of alienating certain groups, they alienated everyone.

Did bush or clinton even have this many scandals hit at one time? Not from what I can recall. And these scandals aren't about interns and cigars.

It takes all kinds. But who makes it appear that this is a universal truth in this country? The media and the kikes that own and control it.

I think it's an illusion they use to try and keep us isolated. They pit us against the "sheeple", when I'm not sure anymore how many sheeple there are out there.

Very likely.

FWIW, 20-some odd years ago I was told by an engineer with a big defense contractor involved in electronic warfare that the goob was monitoring all emissions between DC and light (full spectrum). I believed him then, and I believe it now.

What good it does, is anybody's guess.

To me it seems as if the gates of the evil empire have been opened, and the flood of rot that is pouring out daily is mind boggling. There isn't one person on this 4um that should be surprised by these daily events, but that they can no longer be contained by the media is what I find startling. We know all empires collapse over time, but this front row seat we enjoy is leaving me numb. And just wait until the faux economy collapses. It's no wonder THEY are tying to grab our guns.

HAMASMOIS

I'll keep using old cotton towels to wash/dry my car, using Hamas skins just sounds gross, wrong, and a path to trouble.

In what is likely the most disappointing, if not unexpected, news of the day, we find that according to a just released Pew Research study, a substantial majority, or 56% of Americans, "say the National Security Agency’s (NSA) program tracking the telephone records of millions of Americans is an acceptable way for the government to investigate terrorism." Only 41% object to having every phone conversation intercepted, investigated, analyzed, and recorded for posterity. Sorry Edward Snowden: you just threw your life away for nothing. The sheep have been properly and thoroughly conditioned and brainwashed, which is why they continue to get precisely the government they so rightfully deserve.

Not bad.

First, I would not call that 56% a "substantial majority".

We are not likely to get a majority to agree with us, ever. The majority are just along for the ride and don't give a damn about anything except their own appetites.

People can't even agree on what it takes to do something REALLY important: like staying out of "Hell".

If you were the HNIC, would you want to fight 41% of your population? That is a lot of people, and they are the kinds of people that change things. The 56% can be trifled with at will. The 41% not so much. Quality vs quantity. I'll take quality every time.

I'm surprised that 41% agree with us, since the consensus (illusion) is that americans are all sheep except a special select few.

Lay off the cookies, terrier-boy. They's carbohydrates of mass destruction.

And 'cause short people got no reason...

Upon reflection, I'm not sure if Pew was asking people's opinions or telling them. Nothing is believable anymore.
