My dad passed away in 2002. I had 50 wonderful years with him and couldn't have asked for a better dad. And I am one of the lucky people who can say that the same is true for my mom, couldn't have a better one if I could have chosen. Mom is still with us and we all miss Dad but we know we will see him again someday and also that he is in a much better place.(1 image)

My Dad is gone also, buried under the flag that gave him tuberculosis (from which he recovered) and the nightmares of the Dresden bombings. A member of the "greatest generation" who never acknowledged how they were duped and used but was able to point out how my generation flushed it all down the toilet.

A mentor and inspiration to alot of people as a pastor, parenting was not his strong suit.

God bless him, his last words to my brother and I were that he was going to Heaven and was sorry his sons were not going to be joining him there. Got a feeling he was half right and that we may see him yet.

Very nice, thank you.

I do hope you will join him there. As for not wanting to admit he was duped, no one ever wants to believe that. It's hard to accept that you have been taken in by con men and many, perhaps most, of the so-called "greatest generation" have never accepted that and probably never will because of the cognitive dissonance.

sad, but not uncommon -

I'm glad for you and your memories, JD, but mine are different. I'd guess my father had about 2 or 3 conversations w/me during his lifetime. It never bothered me much because many of my friends were in the same boat.

mine are different too. too much to explain. suffice it to say that i have a few good memories of time spent with my father when i was a young child followed by many bad memories in the ensuing years. he wasn't a bad man other than somewhat of a narcissist, just the product of bad parenting himself so never learned how.

Oh, Dad and I talked a lot. Not that we always agreed, we butted heads pretty often but the love was always there. Do I miss him? Yeah, a lot. Would I have him to come back to a world filled with strife and misery and bad health? No. It gives me great comfort to know that he is in a much better place now, a place where he doesn't suffer and is happy.

I am sorry, Christine, sorry that your childhood was not all it could have been. It is a miracle that my dad turned out as well as he did because he had a very hard childhood. And a lot of that would be too much to explain too.
