Tucked into an alcove of Argentina’s National Cathedral, right beside an icon of the Virgin of Luján, is a wall of yellowed documents written in delicate Hebrew. The pages were rescued from the death camps of Auschwitz, the ruins of Berlin’s synagogue and the remains of this city’s Jewish community center.

The world’s Catholics and Jews have been moving toward reconciliation since the Second Vatican Council. But perhaps nowhere are the two faiths tighter than in Argentina, where many in the Jewish community are celebrating the recent election of their long-time advocate and friend, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, as Pope Francis.

“This was a great event for us,” said Guillermo Borger, president of the AMIA Jewish cultural center, where then-Cardinal Bergoglio was a frequent visitor. “We know this pope very well and I am sure that he is going to look for truth and justice in this world.”

First as archbishop of Buenos Aires, and then as cardinal, Bergoglio, 76, used his office to build ties to Argentina’s estimated 250,000-strong Jewish community, the largest in Latin America.

In 2005, Bergoglio was the first of more than 80 dignitaries to sign a petition asking for justice in the 1994 bombing of the AMIA, which left 85 dead and more than 300 injured. While Iran has been suspected of coordinating the attack, the country denies it. President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has drawn criticism for recently agreeing to team up with Iran to investigate the bombing.

Last year, amid upheaval in the Middle East, Bergoglio organized interfaith prayer services that drew Jews and Muslims to the National Cathedral.

Bergoglio also shared a cable television program with Argentina’s Chief Rabbi Abraham Skorka and they wrote a book together called “Above heaven and earth.”

Interviewed by the AJN news agency in Israel, Skorka said he was eager to “look into the eyes” of his old friend who he said has deep respect for Judaism and Israel.

Waldo Wolff, vice president of the Delegation of Israeli Associations of Argentina, said much of Bergoglio’s work was less formal. Bergoglio had many friends in the Jewish community and was a frequent dinner guest among association members, he said.

“Almost everyone has a picture with him,” Wolff said. “To have a picture with someone who is on their way to being a pope is not easy.”

On Tuesday, this South American nation will be following Francis’ inauguration ceremony, which will be broadcast live on a giant screen erected beside the cathedral. Among the hundreds of delegates in Rome will be 16 Jewish members, from organizations including the World Jewish Congress and the Anti-Defamation League, the Vatican said. The event caps a flurry of activity that began Wednesday when the cardinal conclave surprised the world by electing the first Latin American pope.

On Monday, Kirchner met with Francis for about 20 minutes, the Vatican said. The two figures have often clashed over her administration’s liberal social policies, which include same-sex marriage and birth control. But Kirchner told The Associated Press that the meeting was friendly and that she had asked her old nemesis to intervene on behalf of Argentina in the dispute over the Falkland Islands. Argentina and Britain fought a war in 1982 over the remote islands, which are known as the Malvinas here. While Bergoglio has supported Argentina’s claims in the past, it’s unclear if he will continue his advocacy as the world’s most eminent Catholic.

One of Francis’ first official acts last week was to write a letter to Rome’s Chief Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni, saying “I strongly hope to be able to contribute to the progress of the relations that have existed between Jews and Catholics.”

While documentation is scarce, the Jewish community in Argentina is thought to date back to at least the mid-1800s. The first Jewish wedding took place in 1860 and the first synagogue was built in 1897, according to the city of Buenos Aires. A second wave of Jewish immigrants came here after World War II.

In a sense, Bergoglio has been following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Buenos Aires Cardinal Antonio Quarracino, said Baruj Tenembaum, founder of the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation. Quarracino traveled to Israel and was deeply committed to the Jewish cause, Tenembaum said. It was Quarracino who installed the holocaust memorial in the National Cathedral. Tenembaum said the display is thought to be the only one of its kind in a Catholic church.

Shortly before he died in 1998, Quarracino wrote a letter saying he wanted to be buried at the foot of the memorial so he could continue “striving for [Jewish-Catholic] fraternity like I have been doing my entire life.”

But Bergoglio didn’t focus exclusively on the Jewish community, said Sumer Noufouri, the secretary general of the Islamic Center of Argentina. Noufouri said Bergoglio was a frequent visitor there also and that, in 2009, helped start the Islamic-Christian Dialogue, which sought to bring the two groups together.

“When he told his colleagues in Rome that [the Islamic community here] would visit him at the diocese, he said they were surprised; that they couldn’t believe it,” Noufouri said. “I think he’s going to be good for all of mankind, without exception.”

When you notice that the Jews have taken part in the inauguration of this pope you will know that the time is near when the false messiah ( man of perdition) will be revealed. Trust nothing that comes from that Vatican church.

“Mrs. Van Hyning, I am surprised at your surprise. You are a student of history — and you know that both the Borgias and the Mediciis are Jewish families of Italy. Surely you know that there have been Popes from both of these house. Perhaps it will surprise you to know that we have had 20 Jewish Popes, and when you have sufficient time, which may coincide with my free time, I can show you these names and dates. You will learn from these that: The crimes committed in the name of the Catholic Church were under Jewish Popes. The leaders of the inquisition was one, de Torquemada, a Jew.” (Woman’s Voice, November 25, 1953)

So far he has been standing up for Christians in the Middle East and around the world, so I can't complain about this Pope. If Pope Francis does look for truth and justice in this world, then these Jews will not think it was such a great event then, because justice demands they pay for their crimes against Christians.

God is always good!

I have absolutely nothing against the Jewish people for I am part Jew myself from my mother's side of the family. But I would like to strongly stress that the Jewish Popes who took part in the inquistion against others were in fact, Lucifers "chosen people", the Talmudic Jews (a satanic sect of Jews) and not the Torah Jews of Moses. Even in Scripture, Jesus Christ forbid his disciples to have anything to do with the Talmuds. Whenever you ask a Jew about the "chosen people" ask them who those "chosen people" look to as their god. No Talmudic Jew is a disciple of Jesus Christ but is in fact anti-christ. And the Jews who blindly greet this current pope apparently know him "through his eyes" of who he truly serves. Pope Francis comes from the the Jesuit Order. And I highly doubt it that they serve Jesus Christ for they come from the Black Nobility tribe as far back as the Bavarian Illuminati Order. Some info here on them: peoplesconference.org/black_nobility.htm

Pope Francis was chosen not by the Vatican church at all but instead by the Jesuit Order of black popes. There are two types of popes, the white popes and then there are the black popes from the lineage of the Black Nobility. It is the Black Nobility that has a higher power when electing the pope than that of the Vatican Church.

Notice the “star” symbol which is The Symbol of Catholic "Society of Jesus". A very similar symbol is found on Pope Francis coat of arms. It is my understanding that this Pope took an oath to never run as a candidate as a Pope. Perhaps, he did not run but instead those that he serves under this order advised him to do so for their reasons only. Let not this pope deceive you in appearances for it is who he serves (pledges his allegiance to) that you should be paying attention to.

I live in New Mexico. I'll take "Hispanics" (all of whom are Catholic) any day over niggers, all of whom are being driven out. As for "Hispanics," many of them are white, and that Aztlan nonsense will never happen. "Hispanics" don't like Mexicans very much. For that matter, the "Hispanics" in northern NM are Spanish. And yes, whites will leave the Church rather than put up with Third World trash.

That's good. I didn't know that.

What I liked about Benedict was that he tried to have the classical masses re-instituted - invoking the love for the Catholic Church's traditional liturgy.

The Church lost me with Pope John Paul. In his desire to make the Church more "welcoming", he threw out tradition and classical and he made the Church into almost a Recreation Center. There was no reverie or awe. It was all a folk singing get together. He absolutely ruined the Catholic Church for me with his folksiness garbage. If I want to attend a Unitarian Church, I can do that without membership or study. Also I was not too fond of the priesthood's gayness that coincidently became more noticeable under John Paul's reign. This Pope Francis is coming across ( media hype) like Pope John Paul. I hope my suspicions are wrong.

I agree. There's too much scary anti-white racist hatred that exists in African American communities these days. Thank you, Bammy, Al Sharpton, Rev Wright, et al.

With the Hispanics, not so much. They more likely to hate other minority gang bangers than a white person passing thru whose car breaks down in their neighborhood.

I think it would get ugly real fast if that happened in a Black neighborhood especially if it was a white woman or a young white college guy.

You, like many non-Catholics, have apparently been indoctrinated by agitators with a lot of myths and misdirection to revile the Church and especially the Jesuits.

Like other Catholic orders, Jesuits come from many places. St. Francis Xavier, for instance, was from the Navarre area of Spain and France, not a Black Nobility of Italy. You may have heard about the Japanese Christians who were among the Ground Zero victims of the Nagasaki atomic bombing of WWII. It was the site of the largest Christian Cathedral in the Orient and it was St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit priest, who was the first missionary to bring Christianity there. He had established their community hundreds of years earlier and it continued to grow, despite much persecution through the centuries.

You seem to be opposed to the Pope having protectors and defenders. I don't know why. They've been attacked in wars targeting them before. There have also been Swiss Guards in armed defense service to the Pope for hundreds of years. Only 42 of almost 200 survived such an attack in the early 1500s. There have been some problems with Jesuits for the Church. Much the same could be said of other orders, other religions, other occupations and other ideologies.

Peace be unto you.

Edited for spelling.

You seem to be opposed to the Pope having protectors and defenders. I don't know why.

I am very strongly opposed to the Pope and Vatican church because of their despicable abomination practices concerning witchcraft, pedophilia, and mass murders carried out in the name of their god. And their god is not Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ even stated that this world is not of his world for if this were his world why would man fight against each other in His name. All wars are fought in the name of the prince of this world. The prince of this world is Lucifer because most leaders of regal position worship him. They serve Lucifer. One day that city of Rome will be literally wiped out when Jesus Christ returns.

The Lord is extremely angry with Israel right now due to their abominable practices of serving other gods, but strangely enough, Israel is the apple of the Lords eye and will be protected and those nations who seek to destroy Israel, will be destroyed and including those nations who conspire with those nations to destroy Israel.

And when Jesus returns, he will not come with peace but instead will return with a sword to smite out his enemies. In scripture, the Lord made it perfectly clear that the city of seven hills is in Rome and that it is the city of where the harlot rides the beast. The Vatican church does not believe in Jesus Christ and nor do they believe in the Word of God or Scripture. The pope believes he is God and is above all laws and that those who are against the pope and the Vatican church are heretics. They uphold the virgin Mary as supreme and divine over Jesus and this is very very wrong teachings to teach the Lord's sheeple because it is pure blasphemy! The Mother Mary was chosen to bear the Son of God but this deed does not make her divine at all. But the Vatican church says she is and this is wrong. It is false teachings and is sad that many people cannot see this but because they follow these doctrines from Rome rather than reading their bible and believing in the Word of God (rather than some church doctrine), they become disillusioned. Rome changed the laws concerned worship. The Vatican church does not believe in Genesis concerning God's creation and that the Sabbath day falls on Saturday (not Sunday), they changed the laws concerning this day of worship to Sunday in observation of Sun worship making Sun worship a Holy Day. I do not worship on Sunday for I do not recognize Sunday as a Holy Day. As a matter of fact, Sunday marks the first day of the week for me. Saturday is the seventh day and considered a Holy Day. When a country like Rome occupies another country, the first thing they do is change the laws and laws of worship. This they did.
