Taco Bell will soon start marketing some of its "taco meat fillings" under an even more ambiguous name: protein.

That's the plan for a handful of restaurants in Dayton, Ohio, where the chain will test out a new "Power Protein" menu featuring four new chicken and steak entrees starting July 25. The rebranding is not about moving away from the word "meat" itself so much as it is about offering healthier menu options, according to the company.

All the new offerings will have at least 20 grams of protein and fewer than 420 calories, making them the first items "created with our new nutritional guardrails in mind," according to a Taco Bell press release. Among items on the existing menu, a Cantina Burrito with steak packs 780 calories; the vegetarian option isn't much better at 740. The Volcano Nachos, meanwhile, contain 970 calories and 1,670 milligrams of sodium, more than half the FDA's total daily recommended intake.

In April, Taco Bell announced that it wanted to start offering more balanced, healthy fare. The company said it hoped to have 20 percent of its menu contain one-third or less of the FDA's daily recommended guidelines for fat, sodium, and calories (based on the assumption that most people eat three meals per day) by the year 2020.

The rollout of a protein-branded menu comes months after tests found Taco Bell beef in Britain contained traces of horse meat. The company said its own testing confirmed that finding, but added that no U.S. beef was affected.

Back in 2011, Taco Bell endured another public spectacle over the quality of its meat after a class-action suit alleged the company's beef was really made of just 35 percent beef and a whole bunch of question marks. Taco Bell responded with an ad campaign to "set the record straight" that its meat was actually made with 88 percent beef, with the other 12 percent made with a "secret recipe."

After the lawyers who brought that lawsuit dropped their case, Taco Bell gloated over the victory, asking in another press release, "Would it kill you to say you're sorry?"

There's a Taco Bell in my town.

No way will I buy anything from this franchise.

They claim Trigger and Black Beauty are not in their US franchise's meat.

I don't believe them. It's the same thing that was said to the Brits.

Taco Bell needs to lose business BIG TIME so they can find their ethics and morality.

I suspect that, by proclaiming that meat would henceforth be called 'protein', Taco Bell has opened up a way for it to used 'protein' as a means to market stuff that's not quite meat. You know, the stuff that in dog food is called "meat byproducts" - it comes from the inside of a cow or other animal but officially it's not "meat". But if you cannot call it meat then call it 'protein' - and if the public think that 'protein' is merely your affectation for "meat" then the public will be fooled into accepting meat byproducts. And of course there's protein that never saw the inside of a cow - such as soybeans, the main ingredient of Hamburger Helper.

So, first, Taco Bell announces it's calling meat 'protein' - and then it can legally sell the public that expects meat under another name stuff that nobody would call meat.

There is also vegetable proteins... same damned crap that is in all of chef boyarde's cans and other fine products containing meat.

Textured vegetable protein.

Feels like meat when mixed, almost tasteless but it ain't meat!

Still better than tigger meat but over and all, a cheat to the consumers.

As much as I do not recommend eating that crap, the instruction does say, "just add the beef" Beef is not included with the Helper.

So, first, Taco Bell announces it's calling meat 'protein' - and then it can legally sell the public that expects meat under another name stuff that nobody would call meat.

If you've noticed, although I do NOT patronize Taco Smell, they were slapped on the wrist a couple of years ago because their "beef" was only 65% beef which is well below the legal limit for them to misrepresent market their "meat" as beef. I forget what the USDA standard is but it is well above 65%.

And it is likely that they are adding Soy "Protein" (think GMO and MSG) to their "meat". The last couple of years they have been using the adjective "Beefy" to describe their, uh, "product" but even that is dicey as it implies that they are using what is legally considered "Beef". I suspect this is their way to avoid fines and lawsuits.

I hope you are right - meat by-products and soybean, etc.

Yes, I know that meat by-products are icky.

But I would not want us to sink to the level of some cultures ( eg. Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese) and kill horses ( pets by another name) for human consumption. The image of Trigger or Black Beauty hung by their legs so fat soul-less pricks/prickettes can stuff their ugly faces, makes me sick to my stomach.

The now defunct website OGRE.com showed a Chinese gent that cooked then ate a human infant.

I know you've seen the TV documentary where Cambodians locate large nests then catch and wok fry hundreds of tarantulas. They're cooked whole (too small to clean first) and the kids munch 'em like taco chips. YUM!
