The new rules also mandate a half hour break after 8 hours of driving. Fatigue is listed as causing 13% of accidents (18,000) and 'Driver Felt under work pressure from carrier' is listed as causing 10% of the wrecks (16,000 ). It also beautifully illustrates the point we make at DontWakeMeUp.org, that police officers, DOT inspectors and cops at warrantless internal immigration checkpoints must stop their dangerous and destructive practice of illegally waking up sleeping truckers when they are in their federally mandated sleeper berth 10-hour rest period. As I state in DontWakeMeUp for Dummies, This happened to me in November 2010 while I was sleeping when my partner was ticketed at a weigh station in Devine TX. The police forced me to wake up, get out of the sleeper, and show them ID under threat of arrest. In this case, I recorded both officers while it happened and I filed both state and federal civil rights complaints within a week. Less than one month later The Texas Department of Public Safety admitted wrongdoing in writing on behalf of the two officers. The admission letter, dated December 20, 2010 and signed by Captain Kenneth Plunk of the Waco Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, stated that "corrective action was needed" against both officers and that "additional training has been taken." I then filed a 42 U.S.C. Section 1983 Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit against the troopers for damages, permanent injunction, and to dissuade them from continuing this blatantly illegal practice. One of the documents released in initial disclosures revealed an internal POLICE MEMO from TX DPS officially admitting that "The passenger is under no obligation to comply with request" for ID. If anyone is still confused about whether cops can wake you up in the sleeper, you're a lost cause. Goodbye. Everyone else, continue reading.
Massive July 4th Crash: Demolished Vehicles, Avocados Everywhere

A big rig driver fell asleep and demolished two vehicles in a spectacular July 4th crash in New Mexico, leaving avocados everywhere. The crash occurred on I-40 near mile marker 270 in Santa Rosa. Traffic had been backed up because of a massive hailstorm in the area. The driver reportedly fell asleep and was travelling 65mph when he woke up just in time to swerve to the left, literally embedding the front of his truck into the back of the trailer in front of him. His truck then rolled and netted an incredible sight of mangled metal, avocados, and personal effects from the truck. The driver somehow survived the accident, and fortunately had no co-driver in the vehicle.
