Marble chunk falls from top of Supreme Court Mon Nov 28, 2005 11:47 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A chunk of marble fell from near the roof of the U.S. Supreme Court onto the stairs in the front of the building but no one was injured, a court spokeswoman said on Monday.

Spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said a piece marble about one-foot square, from what was thought to be dentil molding at the top of the building, fell about 9:30 a.m. (1430 GMT). There was no one on the stairs at the time, a half hour before the opening of the court's session.

The marble was above the inscription near the top of the building saying, "Equal Justice Under Law" and above the allegorical figure representing "Order," one of nine sculptured figures on the pediment.

She had no explanation why it fell, but said it was not related to the construction work occurring as part of the renovation of the building. She said no work is currently taking place on the front the building, which faces the U.S. Capitol.

The original construction on the front of the building took place about 70 years ago.

I wonder if the RW christians will see this as a sign? Of course they'll say it's God saying the evil liberals are in charge of the court..

maybe they'll speculate that it could be a sign that man and the laws man has made are in rebellion from god, and it is a subtle sign that god will tear this down.

If it were divine in nature, it would have fallen (squashing half a dozen lawyers to death) been struck by lightning, caught fire and become caught up in one of those all too common inner city hurricanes, then swept through and killed and everyone in the building prior to paying a mach one visit to Congress and the White House press room.

Nah, they'll claim it's a sign from the heavens that we've lost faith in Israel, The Bush Administration and haven't killed nearly enough ragheads or done enough in the WOT.

the masonry is crumbling, and the masons love their symbols.

pretty good interpretation. I didn't think of it, so that means you have to explain everything.

I can see how it ended up getting built without being stable for the long-run. With big pieces of masonry like that that go on the tops of building there is a tendency to think it is all aesthetic and requires no structural help. You have to bolt big chunks of masonry down or else it won't be stable. It's easy to think you can just set it in mortar and it will be OK. Not if it's hanging off the edge and those moment forces are at play. It was probably not built right in the beginning. But I still contend it could be god's design to fall at this time.

This part is too funny for words.
