John Kiriakou, the former CIA officer sentenced to two and a half years in prison for leaking the name of a secret agent in charge of the CIA's Bush-era torture program, has written a letter detailing his initial time served at the Federal Correctional Institute in Loretto, Pennsylvania. The letter reveals a very interesting perspective of a trained intelligence officer — Kiriakou worked for the CIA from 1990 to 2004 — co-mingling with a variety of common criminals.

Kiriakou, 47, who pleaded guilty in October and began his sentence in February, begins the letter by saying that his imprisonment is "punishment for blowing the whistle on the CIA's illegal torture program and for telling the public that torture was official U.S. government policy."

Here are some of the highlights from his picture of prison life:

My cellmates include two Dominicans serving 24- and 20-year sentences for drugs; a Mexican serving 15 years for drugs, and a Puerto Rican serving 7 1/2 years for drug conspiracy; and the former auditor of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, who's doing a long sentence for corruption. They're all decent guys and we actually enjoy each other's company. Of the white prisoners, most are pedophiles with personal stories that would make you sick to your stomach. The rest of the white prisoners are here for drugs, except for a dozen or so who ran Ponzi schemes. Of the 1,369 prisoners, 40 have college degrees and six of us have master's degrees. The GED program is robust. I'm a janitor in the chapel. I make $5.25 a month. It turned out that I had to get a copy of my formal sentencing documents to prove that I wasn't a child molester. I did that, and was welcomed by the Aryans, who aren't really Aryans, but more accurately self-important hillbillies. [One female Corrections Officer] stopped me and said, "Are you the motherf----- whose name I can't pronounce?" I responded, "Ki-ri-AH-koo." She said, "how about if I just call you F---face?"

Kiriakou is the first and only person linked to the controversial "enhanced interrogation" program to be prosecuted.

The Good Germans get rewarded and this guy got the shaft.

Of course, it's Bush's fault.

the link is actually from may 31 2013.

here is the link to the letter

Here is an excerpt:

The only other problem I've had with the CO's was about two weeks after I arrived. I get a great deal of mail here in prison (and I answer every letter I get.) Monday through Friday, prisoners gather in front of the unit CO's office for mail call. One female CO butchers my name every time she says it. So when she does mail call, I hear "Kirkakow, Kiriloo, Teriyaki" and a million other variations. One day after mail call I passed her in the hall. She stopped me and said, "are you the motherfucker whose name I can't pronounce?" I responded, "Ki-ri-AH-koo." She said, "How about if I just call you Fuckface?" I just walked away and a friend I was walking with said, "Classy." I said to him, "White trash is more like it." An hour later, four CO's descended on both of our cells, trashing all of our worldly possessions in my first "shake-down." Lesson learned: CO's can treat us like subhumans but we have to show them faux respect even when it's not earned.

I'll write about CO's more next time. If you'd like to drop me a line, I can be reached at: John Kiriakou, 79637-083, PO Box 1000, FCI Loretto, Loretto PA 15940.

Best regards from Loretto,

John

Thanks for the better link. I almost feel like writing to the guy, but I guess I should read his book first.

I wrote and got a nice reply from ZZZZBest swindler Barry Minkow about twenty years ago when he was in prison. I gambled and lost about $4K on his company maybe five years earlier.

I saw Minkow was reformed and on some 60 Minutes piece. I have just since googled him and see that he's in hot water again.

I don't know anything about John Kiriakou or his case other than that he was a co-worker/friend of a friend of mine who is a 911 truther /4um type and a good guy. I am told John Kiriakou is legit and a good sincere person who was screwed by the evil govt.

I believe that. Write him a letter and tell him so.

Send him a return envelope and maybe some extra stamps. He's a professional with lots of time on his hands and would be happy to read and respond.

I don't really have anything to say to the guy since I know nothing about him or his case, but im sure a lot of people write to him, as he said.

Jesus called for us to visit the imprisoned so its certainly never a bad idea. but the cops, they treat jail visitors as suspects/prisoners themselves which is a shame.

I wrote to McVeigh but never got a response. It may have put me on a watch list, but I don't give a crap about that. I sent him some Catholic items and somewhere I kept the draft hand written copy.

I visited a friend in jail about two years ago. It was a strange experience, actually eye opening. He had 30 days. I helped keep an eye on his dog too. When I sat down and he came forward, he turned around and raised his arms and said, "I'm xxxxx County's Finest!" Kind of like a high school kid would do with his school colors on. We laughed. It was a good visit. I saw a few other visitors I knew - old Angie. Mostly drug stuff and minor crimes.

That's what caught my interest in this article, the personal account. My friend has some pretty good stories to tell of his 30 day "vacation". That's what they tell family and friends, you know.

a while back I was going to visit somebody and I went to the jail website to wade thru all their rules, very restrictive hours, and requirements. they wanted so many thing ahead of time, all your previous addresses, anything youve ever been arrested for even if you weren't charged, anything you've been charged with, convicted of, all your past addresses, etc etc etc. and you had to tell them ahead of time when you want to visit. that's what I mean by treating visitors as suspects.

My visit was to the county jail on a Saturday morning. I recall they asked for a picture ID and I may have signed in on a log sheet with the time, for visit sequence. There were about six window seats with the phones like you see in the movies.

There were a good number of visitors, mostly family members. It was a bit depressing but I'm sure my friend appreciated my presence.

I didn't feel like I was treated as a suspect, although I've heard a story or two of visitors getting citations for not changing their address on their drivers license and stuff.
