U. Penn Religious Studies prof. Anthea Butler is the embodiment of modern academia. Writing on her blog what she thinks of the Zimmerman “not guilty” verdict, she ripped the Almighty for the cosmic injustice: God ain’t good all of the time. In fact, sometimes, God is not for us. As a black woman in a nation that has taken too many pains to remind me that I am not a white man, and am not capable of taking care of my reproductive rights, or my voting rights, I know that this American god ain’t my god. As a matter of fact, I think he’s a white racist god with a problem. More importantly, he is carrying a gun and stalking young black men.
When George Zimmerman told Sean Hannity that it was God’s will that he shot and killed Trayvon Martin, he was diving right into what most good conservative Christians in America think right now. Whatever makes them protected, safe, and secure, is worth it at the expense of the black and brown people they fear.
Read the rest of the post if you like, but as for most people, “ain’t nobody got time for that.” The broader point is that the University of Penn. will undoubtedly shield Butler behind the mantle of “academic freedom,” and if you’d like to test this theory out, feel free to email the President. Since Butler is merely smearing Christians (not to mention “God”), it won’t count as “hate speech.”
Say anything untoward about a Democrat politician, an Islamist, or any of the left’s protected minorities (not sure about Asians, the median income of this group is too high for most to need the left’s nonsense), and an esteemed member of the faculty will go to an ex-professor out on the street panhandling faster than you can say “Marxism is awesome.”
This may come as a head-exploding revelation for a college youth who accidentally stumbles onto a non-leftist website, but there used to be a time when academia was about pursuing the truth. Nowadays, universities resemble radical think tanks and Democrat voter outreach more than institutions of higher learning.
