Ubuntu Forums is down for maintenance

There has been a security breach on the Ubuntu Forums. The Canonical IS team is working hard as we speak to restore normal operations. This page will be updated regularly with progress reports. What we know

Unfortunately the attackers have gotten every user's local username, password, and email address from the Ubuntu Forums database. The passwords are not stored in plain text, they are stored as salted hashes. However, if you were using the same password as your Ubuntu Forums one on another service (such as email), you are strongly encouraged to change the password on the other service ASAP. Ubuntu One, Launchpad and other Ubuntu/Canonical services are NOT affected by the breach.

Kinda rare for someone to be attacking a linux site. I think.

Honestly I am not sure if I ever registered for those forums or not. I don't remember ever posting there, so I probably didn't. But just in case I did I am going to change a few passwords.

Yeah, I think so too.

Americans who have no experience with, or knowledge of, tyranny believe that only terrorists will experience the unchecked power of the state. They will believe this until it happens to them, or their children, or their friends.

I think maybe I was registered there a long time ago but never used the site and don't even remember the password.

Do you have either of the satellite radio providers?

Free is good.

When my free XM expired, I declined to pay for their service and didn't miss it at all...we've got lots of signals from which to choose in this country.

I believe the cost was around 200/yr - which seemed too high for what driving I did at the time.

yep, $200 is not worth it for the barrage of tripe they offer, & from what i remember they even have commercials too.. Money better spent supporting the good hosts directly. I forgot to mention Dr Kevin Barrett AmericanFreedomRadio.com Awesome show, great

Linux-eze for describing a vunerability in a linux software package called Bind, which is a package which translates domain names to IP addresses. Vunerabilities in Linux software are constantly being found and patched, but it's it's open source, a lot more eyes are looking at things than MS software. This particular vunerability is a Denial of Service vunerability because just transmitting malformed data to this software can cause it to overwork and load down a system.

This is something that will likely be patched in short order.
