HOUSTON -- A mural of President Obama painted on the side of a popular midtown restaurant has been defaced again.

This time the vandals splashed it with a mysterious white substance.

The mural has been sprayed with acrylic and had to be repainted three times.

A man was arrested for vandalizing the artwork in January, and records show he's still in jail.

HOUSTON—A mural in midtown Houston depicting President Obama has once again been defaced by vandals.

The painting on the side of a building across the street from The Breakfast Klub, a popular midtown restaurant, was splattered with black paint sometime overnight Monday. The artist who created the mural says it’s the fourth time vandals have struck it since 2008.

“Same story different day,” said Marcus Jones, the owner of the building. “I think that there are some sad and sick people out there.”

The painting was a recreation of a photograph showing President Obama smiling and pointing at a camera. Houston artist Reginald Adams created it last October after his last mural was splashed with blood red paint. Surveillance video of that incident showed two men wearing masks and driving a pick-up truck, but the vandals were never caught.

Jones planned to review his surveillance system with police to determine whether his cameras had captured images of the latest crime.

“We’ve got to ask ourselves not what can the police do to prevent it, or what the security cameras do to prevent it, or what can Marcus do to prevent it,” he said. “We’ve got to ask ourselves, how do we heal our nation to a point where we don’t want to do these types of things to someone’s personal property.”

The mural has become something of a landmark in midtown Houston, visible to drivers taking the busy Travis exit from the Southwest Freeway. But it has also become emblematic of the political passions surrounding the election of the nation’s first black president.

“Even though we come a long way in this country, we still have a little way to go,” said Reggie Jones, a customer wearing an Obama T-shirt who was standing in line at the restaurant.

Adams plans to paint an entirely new mural on the wall sometime in the next few days.

Definitely some sad and sick people--at least the one who painted the mural of the Kenyan and the other one who would have it on his restaurant. That's real sad and real sick.

They added the white baby the last time the Bummer was spray painted in January. Guess they thought that image might deter further attacks.

I don't think this activity will end until the owner replaces the mural with a Coca Cola sign or hires 24-hour security. There must be like three city surveillance cams at the intersection just south of the Breakfast Klub.

Is this a decent part of town?

Not if they have murals of the Kenyan.

It's OK down there. It's on that long stretch of Main and Travis that connects skyscraper downtown with Rice and the ritzy shopping a couple of miles southwest. Houston Community College is just east of there and it's a little bit more low rent than either of the areas just mentioned. The Continental Club is down that way. I think that it's owned by the same guy that owns the Continental Club in Austin.

Lotsa gas stations, funky art galleries and museums down there. It's the bus station part of town, and there are collections of homeless in and around the area, but they ran the downtown rail line down Main Street so the cops keep a lid on the nonsense.

You can google the Breakfast Klub in Houston and see it on maps. The mural is on the building across from the breakfast club that the owner leases out for odd purposes like political work. Oddly, the street shot of the building shows the mural the way it looked a couple of years ago the first time it was repainted after it was first defaced.

Instead of defacing a mural of Obama, one should be painted on a synagogue.

"If an angry bigot assumes this bountiful cause of Abolition, and comes to me with his last news from Barbados, why should I not say to him, 'Go love thy infant; love thy wood-chopper: be good-natured and modest; have that grace; and never varnish your hard, uncharitable ambition with this incredible tenderness for black folk a thousand miles off. Thy love afar is spite at home.'"
