Why is TV cooler than movies these days?

There are a lot of reasons for the decline in Cool Factor of movies relative to television, but this new Wall Street Journal article updates the numbers behind a big contributor that I identified in Taki's Magazine four years ago. From the WSJ:

The impact upon the quality of films and the quantity of quality films influenced by the Mexicanization of the American audience is rather like the widely discussed effect of globalization: famously, explosions translate into any language, witty dialogue less so. But, as Hispanics become a massive pillar in the domestic audience, explosions play better here, too.

For example, the Academy Awards gave the latest Best Picture to Ben Affleck's "Argo" largely to encourage the production of more mid-budget flicks aimed at middle-aged, educated, white Americans (like the Academy voters). "Argo" was a fine movie, but it's hard to imagine it winning Best Picture in past eras when Hollywood made a similar quality movie for grown-ups about once a month rather than as a once a year exception that proves the rules.

In contrast, television, especially subscription channels, can rope in smaller but highly articulate predominantly white audiences for shows like Downton Abbey and Mad Men.

Let me point out the peculiar aspect of white flight from increasingly Mexicanized things: it's seldom talked about as much as white flight from black things. The media is constantly full of discussions of whether or not whites are listening to enough black music or giving blacks enough Academy Awards. This kind of thing strikes white people as fun to argue over.

In contrast, white people's declining interest in all things Mexican or even Mexican-influenced is almost never mentioned. It's not a conspiracy of silence, however. It's a conspiracy of boredom. (2 images)

The Counselor looks like a huge hit for 20thCentury Fox studios.

Guessing that Mrs.L is all over that on her screen - she absolutely loves that type program.

I watch very little Tee Bee (mostly College Football when my alma mater is playing - Goooooooooooooooooooooooo Beaverssssssssssss!) and there are very few of Hollywood's offerings that appeal to me. Hollywood has themselves to blame. Glittery shit is still shit.

As for what the statistics are really showing it is that AMERICANS are not going to their movies to see shallow repetitive CRAP.

Note that the majority (about 19%) were more than likely born and raised in American culture with an American perspective. While there are going to be some differences in taste among the the three groups represented by that 19% it will be primarily a difference in viewpoint not language or culture.

When Hollywood turns out a movie worth seeing I'll take the time to watch it.

A more intriguing number not addressed in this article is what percentage of video entertainment spending, by Americans, is on older, higher quality, movies? I know that the vast majority of my watching of anything is on DVD and most of the stuff I watch is greater than ten years old, or even much older.

But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings - that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” ~ Gautama Siddhartha — The Buddha

I rarely go to movies because they suck.

I saw Lincoln and it sucked. I saw The Hunger Games and even it had problems. I can't remember the last time I went before the Hunger Games.

The few episodes I watched were top-notch drama/soap-opera, and I mean that as a compliment. Also, White as all get-out, no moolies/mexi's/muzzies. That's the unspoken appeal to this show, and it drives the MSM nuts that the time- period/locale won't allow Morgan Freeman/Denzel Washington/Oprah Winfrey/etc. to make an appearance.
