Earlier tonight JT posted an article from The Onion. When I clicked the link to go to the source I got it for just a couple of seconds and then it disappeared. Happened again when I just typed in theonion.com without the rest of the url that went to that specific article. It came up but just for a second or two and then vanished. I have no idea why that happened or how it is possible. That is why I am asking--thanks for clearing it up for me if you understand it (I sure don't).

Possibly there was an error in the web page coding at the onion for a few seconds. It could happen during an update of their page if the update hits a snag and doesn't complete. Your browser might have cached the erroroneous coding so the reloads might have done the same thing.

It's the kind of thing that could happen once in 10,000 page loads. Restarting the browser could clear it if, if nothing else does.

I restarted Firefox and it still didn't work. The page just disappears--it looks like it is there if you were just going by the tab (I have 11 open at the moment). But when you click on it it is just a blank white page (that is, after a couple of seconds when you initially try to load the page). I am confuzzled, never had anything like this happen before.

I'm using firefox 23.0 and none of the stuff about clearing cookies, history and cache is shown on the tools menu. ???

Under the History Tab is Clear Recent History - which I haven't a clue what that would do to your machine...it's algore's fault.

Thanks Lod. I tried that and you can use that to clear the history, cache and cookies. All it says is "clear recent history" but if you look at it there is something on it that says details and you can click on that and it shows you what can be deleted. I chose to clear out everything--cookies, cache and history. But it didn't help anything. The Onion still won't stay on when I try to access it.

I've got 23.0 also, and I believe we're using the same OS, linux mint.

After loading the page, capture the HTML source code and email that to me. I'll PM my addr in case you don't have it.

Yes, I use Linux Mint and am loving it so far. Source code has been captured and is on its way to you. Thank you Neil.

I looked at it but couldn't make heads or tails of anything. I don't know what to suggest. NSA intervention on your line, or something goofy on your system...??

I have no idea but it seems to me that if it was the NSA messing with me they wouldn't just block The Onion. This is the first time I have even clicked on a link from there in years. And I don't know what it could be about my system since I don't have any problem accessing other sites. It's a puzzle to me but thanks for trying.

I was partially joking about the NSA. Ricky's suggestion was spot on, though. If it works fine in other browsers, then it appears solely a firefox issue. Try uninstalling and reinstalling it.

I believe that since FF 13.0 or so, FF automatically updates its latest incantation.

Mine now shows 23.0.1 version.

It does on Windows, but not on Ubuntu Linux. You have to install the updates yourself.

Using OS-X here, but why wouldn't it auto-update no matter the OS?

Lod  posted on  2013-08-22   17:52:40 ET  Reply   Untrace   Trace   Private Reply

Because Ubuntu has to modify it some to work with their unity interface.

Thanks - clearly, I know nothing about anything Linux.

I just need an OS that works, and OS-X is great here.
