ScienceDaily...

Aug. 29, 2013 — Not only do statins extend lives by lowering cholesterol levels and reducing the risks of cardiovascular disease, but new research in the September 2013 issue of The FASEB Journal suggests that they may extend lifespans as well. Specifically, statins may reduce the rate at which telomeres shorten, a key factor in the natural aging process. This opens the door for using statins, or derivatives of statins, as an anti-aging therapy. Share This: 76

"By telomerase activation, statins may represent a new molecular switch able to slow down senescent cells in our tissues and be able to lead healthy lifespan extension," said Giuseppe Paolisso, M.D., Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Internal Medicine, Surgical, Neurological Metabolic Disease and Geriatric Medicine at Second University of Naples in Naples, Italy.

To make this discovery, Paolisso and colleagues worked with two groups of subjects. The first group was under chronic statin therapy, and the second group (control), did not use statins. When researchers measured telomerase activity in both groups, those undergoing statin treatment had higher telomerase activity in their white blood cells, which was associated with lower telomeres shortening along with aging as compared to the control group. This strongly highlights the role of telomerase activation in preventing the excessive accumulation of short telomeres.

"The great thing about statins is that they reduce risks for cardiovascular disease significantly and are generally safe for most people. The bad thing is that statins do have side effects, like muscle injury," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. "But if it is confirmed that statins might actually slow aging itself -- and not just the symptoms of aging -- then statins are much more powerful drugs than we ever thought."

Of course, you will be a demented dunce in a wheel chair with little muscle function, but with lower cholesterol, and live to be 110 on the taxpayers dime. My father took statins and lost entire time blocks of his memory. Many lose the use of their legs and end up in wheelchairs.

I just discussed this at length with my cardiologist. There are a few highly medically sound studies that support this theory. Personally, I rejected them, but to each their own. I'm not of the belief that all pharma is eeeeevil, in fact I'm glad it's available so people can make informed choices.

Having heart problems I have done a lot of reading on statins - and then chucked them all into the trash. The same result can be achieved with a change of diet supplemented with natural products such as Garlic, Tumeric, and Coconut Oil without the nasty side-effects that go along with Statins (such as damage to the Liver and Pancreas - along with the side-effects ratcat mentioned, but wait Johnny there's more!).

Yep, this was my conclusion also. as of late July, my cholesterol numbers are; HDL = 37, LDL = 24, with an overall cholesterol @ 100. I'm 6'1", 200 pounds w/ a HR of 45 BPM. I run 3x a week (at least). Just effing weird that I was in the ICU with an MI this time last year :(

I haven't seen my numbers lately, but the Cardiologist I used to see pooh-pooed the rapid decline since he vass a gut liddle doktor und beeeeelieeefed in Statins. Funny you should mention the ICU - that is also where I was at this time last year - Pneumonia complicated by a heart attack. I'm glad to see that the reports of our demise were greatly exaggerated. :-)

I'm not back to running yet (although I did start on the treadmill a while back) but along with the plaque in my major arteries I have calcium deposits on the aortic valve - which requires a different approach. The Cardiologist at the VA wants me to have a valve replacement but I am giving another non-surgical approach (which is being validated in recent research) a try by supplementing with Vitamin K1 and K2. If I'm still here in 6 months you can take my word that it works. ;-)

Cholesterol doesn't cause heart disease, so low cholesterol will not prevent it. Inflammation of the arteries causes most heart disease. Stay away from all fried foods and any partially hydrogenated oils. Eat an onion a day it will help keep inflammation down in your arteries. High doses of niacin can also help clean your arteries out. It can also cause flushing which causes most people stop taking it, but is completely harmless.

BTW, you are in great shape, but even people in great shape cannot eat whatever they want.

Thank you. I'll check it out. I've been using a combination of various "K's". Furturebiotic puts out a K with all three of the most useful forms - K1, K2 MK4, and K2 MK7. Since I am on a heavy "K" regimen I also take Swanson's Ultra K2 (MK7 from Natto), Carlson's K2 (MK4), and Swanson's K1. If I can consolidate down to one pill that does it all that is a lot less swallowing. Now if only I could find a form of Magnesium that doesn't make me do "the Quickstep". ;-)

At this point, just in terms of how I feel, the "K's" seem to be doing their job in breaking down the calcium deposits that has my Cardiologist talking Valve replacement. We'll see how this progresses.

Unfortunately once you have stents installed Vitamin K becomes problematic. You might want to check into Vitamin K3 (prescription only) to help slow down the calcium deposits that build up on the newer stents (from my reading I learned that the older metal ones were not as prone to calcium build up). However, as you already appear to know, K1 and K2 are problematic when you are using blood thinners because in addition to regulating calcium out of soft tissue and into bones, which is good, they also control clotting and can cause blood clots to form once you have stents and are on blood thinners. Since I am trying to avoid becoming a "Cash Cow" for Big Pharma I'm giving the Vitamin K regimen a good whirl before I indulge the Cardiologist's pseudo-scientific whims.

Coconut Oil is also good as it contains long chain fatty acids which have all sorts of benefits. I use it in my morning protein smoothie along with UDO's 3-6-9. I also take a garlic supplement (2 forms) as well as Tumeric Extract, D3, Magnesium Chelate, etc., .... That is all in addition to the Linus Pauling Regimen of Vitamin C (6 - 18 gms per day, along with 5 gms of L-Lysine, and 3 gms of L-Proline.

Slow Human Aging by Protecting

The best medicine for the human heart is JOY. Joyfulness slows human aging....and even if a bus comes along and takes you out early, at least you spent your time joyfully.

Big Pharma cannot duplicate joy and it truly is the best medicine for the human heart and promotion of longevity. : )

And for the sake of clarity, I speak of the emotion, not the lovely ladies named Joy. lol

Perhaps, I simply don't know. I do know that for every medical study there seems to be a well authored alternate view. In the end we, individually, need to follow the things we were taught as kids; eat a healthy diet, exercise, limit (don't exclude) the fun food we all eat and take an 81 mg aspirin daily. I haven't a clue if this regime will extend my stay on this planet, but should I depart tomorrow it's been a great ride and I have zero regrets!

Definitely you want to go with Organic as long as it is in your budget. All "Extra-Virgin" means is that it came from the first pressing and not from any subsequent repressings of what was left after the first pressing was done. As far as I know it began in referring to the different grades of Olive Oil. The assumption is that the first pressing ("Extra Virgin" - as opposed to a few of my old girl friends) has the maximum amount of flavor and the other good things in Olive or Coconut Oil.

From all my reading the science supporting the Cholesterol FAD among MD's is just that - a fad - mostly resulting from Pharmaceutical Company Marketing Departments. A lot of what the MD's even know about Statins and Beta Blockers is Junk Science. When you start digging into it there is very little real scientific support for striving for abnormally low cholesterol levels.

There is even less evidence that cholesterol just spontaneously builds up. There is an underlying cause for the body's systems, which are generally a self correcting mechanism, to put down layers of cholesterol on arterial walls. Linus Pauling attributed the cause to lesions in the arterial walls as a result of subclinical Scurvy (Vitamin C deficiency). Thus the Pauling Regimen involves the use of high doses of Vitamin C along with the essential Amino Acid L-Lysine. Dr. Matthias Rath, in Clinical Study, further added the Amino Acid L-Proline as it seems to be very effective in binding with the form of sticky cholesterol, LP(a), which is what the body uses to patch the arterial lesions caused by inflammation, and break down of arterial walls (the epidermal layer for you technically minded) resulting from sub-clinical Scurvy. Your body requires cholesterol for a lot of different functions - brain health being one of the big ones. While I can't point at a study for it - the memory loss and confusion associated with Statin drugs appears, just by reasoning it out from effect back to cause, to be a result, at least in part, of the action of the drug to block cholesterol uptake - particularly in the brain. In fact I have read of a couple of studies lately the validated excessively low cholesterol as creating more problems than it allegedly solves. There is a good body of clinical, and anecdotal, evidence that strongly supports the preceding contention. However, Statins are a big money machine for Big Pharma (who pays for all of those Bermuda Vacations for high level FDA administrators and "researchers") and anything which invalidates the need for that particular "Cash Cow" will be fought tooth and nail. After all is said and done Big Pharma, and by extension the FDA, is not about health but about making money.

However, I am NOT an MD and this is in no way medical advice. (Boilerplate disclaimer since the FDA Gestapo frowns on anything not approved of by their bosses at Big Pharma - the foul endemic corruption at the FDA being what it is.)

Yes, the bottom line is that most of "modern" Medicine's favorite flavors of Snake Oil come's down to the bottom line. Any benefit received by the patient is purely coincidental. Book claims high cholesterol doesn't cause heart disease

May 20, 2013 (WPVI) -- A new book says cholesterol has little to do with heart disease and people are spending too much time, energy, and money trying to control it.

"The Great Cholesterol Myth" is a New York Times best-seller which goes against what many in the medical community have been preaching for years. The authors are Dr. Steven Sinatra, a board-certified cardiologist, and Jonny Bowden, a Ph.D. Action News spoke with Bowden about this theory and if high cholesterol doesn't cause heart disease, what does?

61-year-old Marsha Dougherty has to take dozens of medications including one to lower her cholesterol.

Heart disease runs in her family. She lost both her father and sister to heart attack.

They were both only 52 when they died.

"I was devastated and to be honest with you, I will never get over it. It was just so sudden," Marsha said.

Marsha believes high cholesterol like the kind she has caused their deaths.

But now the new book, "The Great Cholesterol Myth," goes against what we've always been told.

The authors say "cholesterol does not cause heart disease."

I spoke with Jonny Bowden via satelite.

"Trying to lower heart disease by lowering cholesterol is like trying to lower the calories you're eating by taking the lettuce off your whopper, fries and shake," Bowden said.

He believes the attention to cholesterol is, "taking our eyes off the ball on what really causes heart disease - things we can really do something about."

And as for medications like statins, Bowden said, "We are prescribing very strong medicines with many, many side effects to thousands and thousands of people who should not be on them, for whom no real benefit has been shown and who may suffer a lot of side effects," Bowden said.

We brought a copy of the book to preventative cardiologist Dr. Daniel Rader at Penn.

He says the title is a great way to sell books, but he doesn't agree with the main theme.

"There is more data to suggest cholesterol as a causal risk factor for heart disease than just about anything else that exists," Rader said.

And as for statins and other cholesterol-lowering medications, Rader said, "These drugs work, they are safe and they do reduce risk, but they don't reduce risk in everybody."

Dr. Rader says one good thing about this book is that it shines the spotlight on other factors that contribute to heart disease.

The authors write inflammation is the true cause of heart disease.

They're not talking about the kind of reaction that happens when you stub your toe, but chronic inflammation.

"This is the little micro-injuries and tears that occur in the vascular wall. When that happens, debris gets caught in those inflamed pockets," Bowden said.

Bowden says this can be triggered by a number of things including eating too much sugar.

He says the best way to combat heart disease is by lowering inflammation in our diet and in our lifestyle.

"What you're looking for is anti-inflammatory foods," Bowden said.

Anti-inflammatory foods such as fruits and vegetables, omega-3 and flax seed.

"That's going to have the biggest effect on lowering heart disease, not lowering cholesterol and if you lower stress, you will knock out another big percentage of it," Bowden said. Bowden says the premise of "the Cholesterol Myth" isn't new. He says that from the time cholesterol was first tagged as a cause of heart disease,"There's been a vocal minority who's questioned the research on which this was based, who looked at some of the studies, and said - you know, the data's not really there."

But again the views in this book are not the same as many in the medical community. Dr. Rader says there are many factors that contribute to heart disease including cholesterol. Dr. Sinatra and his co-author Bowden say there is one type of cholesterol - the small molecule in the LDL - that plays a role in the development of heart disease. But it is not measured in the standand blood test.

Studies show that LDL, the so-called 'bad' cholesterol, has two types of particules: large buoyant ones, and smaller more dense ones. The smaller particles appear to do more damage, by penetrating the walls of arteries. The number of small particles can be measured indirectly, by counting the overall number of LDL particles. The higher the number, the more small particles.

Several large medical institutions, such as the Mayo Clinic, have recognized the presence of the particles, but don't advocate abandoning the conventional thinking on cholesterol's importance in heart disease.

Bottom line, besides the medication debate, the advice from Jonny Bowden and his co-author echoes a familiar strain: eat fruits and vegetables, don't smoke, exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy weight.

God is always good!

"There is more data to suggest cholesterol as a causal risk factor for heart disease than just about anything else that exists," Rader said.

And examples of research not funded by Big Pharma that would bear that out are?

By the way thank you for the ping.

Old Cardiologists are like old Sailors - they hang on to the myths which they were raised with. Thomas Kuhn pointed out in his seminal work "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" that senior scientists will fight to the death to defend the existing paradigm upon which they staked their career - regardless of contradictory evidence. One can see that at work in virtually all branches of science. One of my favorites out of archaeology was a tower uncovered in a lava flow. Geologically the flow that encased the building was 8,000 years old. However, Archaeologists dated the tower to 3,500 B.C. - 2,500 years after the lava flow had engulfed the tower. To do otherwise would have upset their theories.

While I should go track it down again I read the results of a study done among MD's in Britain who claimed the mantle of scientific medicine. 80% of the treatments they were attached to, and using, had no real scientific backing despite their protestations that "Modern Medicine" is "evidence based". Hogwash! Despite their pretensions much of the practice of so-called "modern medicine" is quackery with insufficient, and often in contradiction to observed data, validation by independent study conducted by researchers not funded by companies with a financial stake in the outcome of the study.

"“Believe nothing merely because you have been told it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings - that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” ~ Gautama Siddhartha — The Buddha
