New York, NY - Congressman Charles B. Rangel issued the following statement regarding US involvement in Syria:

"I strongly abhor and condemn the news that chemical weapons were reportedly used by the government of Syria. However, I strongly urge the President to seek an affirmative decision of Congress prior to committing any U.S. military engagement to this complex crisis.

Before we commit our military personnel to another war, we must reinstate the draft. Reinstating the draft and requiring women to register for the Selective Service would compel the American public to have a stake in the wars we fight as a nation. We must question why and how we go to war, and who decides to send our men and women into harm's way.

Military engagement should be our last resort. If we must go to war, every American should be compelled to stop and think twice about whether it is worth sending our brothers and sisters, and sons and daughters to fight. Currently less than one percent of America's population is unfairly shouldering the burden of war."

There will be no draft. As long as Joe Yokel from Dustbin, Texas voluntarily joins no one cares. Try to draft the middle-class and watch a bunch of politicians get recalled.

There will be a draft.

Joe Yokel (me) volunteered then as now because with or without a draft, myself and the rest of the Yokels are the ones that will in the front lines.

This has always been true and will never change. It is not often discussed but there is and has always been on the books a draft for people with critical skills. True, these people are a step or two above we of the Yokel clan, never the less, ask any doctor under 65 how he feels about the draft.

It is a lesson in life when you see men dragged off in chains by others with big guns. I "volunteered" and was in Korea when the FBI and police came to my home for me.

Andrew Carnegie had the proper elitist approach when advising his son to hire a Yokel to take his place in the Civil War. Andrew said there were many "less worthy" that should volunteer or be drafted.

I'll bet you 20,000,000,000 Zimbabwean dollars there won't be a draft.

Ha...

My Grandfather was a FDR supporter, all in favor of sending the Yokels off to war.

Then when the law said all males to age 65 had to register for the draft, he turned peacenik.

Question..

If North Korea and China head South one more time, should we write off our 25,000 grunts in South Korea?

In retrospect, I don't see why South Korea hasn't stepped up and told American troops to vacate their peninsula because they "can handle it".

Here's a more intriguing question: what if Congress told South Korea that they were on their own and that Congress was going to transfer those 25,000 troops and materiel to Israel to man their borders?? What would be the difference???

We did just that in January of 1950, and 35,000 of my comrades paid for that idea with their lives.

Acheson spoke in January, and in June we were in all out war. Russian archives tell the story that Stalin immediately started preparing the North Koreans and Chinese for an invasion of South Korea.

Many of my friends still lie over there because of that idea.

EXCERPTS FROM ACHESON'S SPEECH TO THE NATIONAL PRESS CLUB JANUARY 12, 1950

This afternoon I should like to discuss with you the relations between the peoples of the United States and the peoples of Asia.... What is the situation in regard to the military security of the Pacific area, and what is our policy in regard to it?

In the first place, the defeat and the disarmament of Japan has placed upon the United States the necessity of assuming the military defense of Japan so long as that is required, both in the interest of our security and in the interests of the security of the entire Pacific area and, in all honor, in the interest of Japanese security. We have American, and there are Australian troops in Japan. I am not in a position to speak for the Australians, but I can assure you that there is no intention of any sort of abandoning or weakening the defenses of Japan, and that whatever arrangements are to be made, either through permanent settlement or otherwise, that defense must and shall be maintained.

This defensive perimeter runs along the Aleutians to Japan and then goes to the Ryukyus. We hold important defense positions in the Ryukyu Islands, and those we will continue to hold. In the interest of the population of the Ryukyu Islands, we will at an appropriate time offer to hold these islands under trusteeship of the United Nations. But they are essential parts of the defensive perimeter of the Pacific, and they must and will be held..........
