"Pennsyltucky."

The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area is in red, the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area is in blue, and the "Pennsyltucky counties" are white.

"Pennsyltucky" is a slang portmanteau of the state names Pennsylvania and Kentucky. It is used to characterize—usually humorously, but sometimes deprecatingly—the rural part of the state of Pennsylvania outside the Pittsburgh and Philadelphia metropolitan areas, more specifically applied to the local people and culture of its mountainous central Appalachian region.

It has long been common usage in the military.

I first heard it, in 1950, in TX, always in a very deprecating way. We are always among the first invited to foreign wars.

In those days, our flight crews were usually dominated by three states, CA PA and TX.
