The US and European countries should attack Syria, but Israel should not be involved in the assault, two polls in weekend Hebrew newspapers found.

While polls in the US and United Kingdom have found overwhelming opposition to their countries attacking Syria, a Gal Hadash poll published in Israel Hayom found that 66.6 percent of respondents would be in favor of American and European military intervention in Syria.

Only 17% opposed a US/EU strike and 16.4% did not know.

When asked whether they thought such an attack would take place, 72.8% said yes, 15.8% no, and 11.4% did not know.

Asked whether they were concerned that American intervention in Syria would lead to Israeli intervention in the war, 66.8% said yes, 28.7 said no and 4.5% did not know. Regarding what Israeli intervention there would be, 57.4% said limited IDF activity, 14.1% said Syria would attack Israel but the IDF would not respond, 12.9% said there would be all out Middle East war, and 15.6% did not know.

A separate Ma’agar Mohot poll published in Friday’s Ma’ariv found that Israelis overwhelmingly oppose an Israeli strike on Syria. If America does not intervene in Israel’s northeastern neighbor, 77% of respondents who expressed an opinion said Israel should not get involved militarily, 11% said the IDF should, and 12% said they did not know and other answers.

When divided among how people voted in the January general election, 79% of Likud voters opposed Israeli military intervention in Syria, while 96% of Labor and Meretz voters were opposed.

The Ma'agar Mohot poll of 519 respondents had a 4.5 percentage point margin of error. The Gal Hadah poll was taken Wednesday among 500 adult Jewish Israelis and had a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.

I don't understand why Israeli's would want the current gov of Syria taken out. Wouldn't the rebels replacing them be more hostile to Israel? It seems they would be.

Do Israelis just want Syrians to die, just because they are Syrians?

Or do they want a hostile Syria just to keep victim illusion going?

Israel should have an interest in keeping the current Syrian gov in place.

Based on my readings of Israeli comments in Haaretz and ynetnews, et al that's just one of the things Israelis would like to see happen if the US attacked Syria. i.e. lots of collateral damage of Syrians from US bombs

Secondly, Israelis seem to think that if Assad - who keeps tribal infighting in check - is removed, there will be lots and lots of tribal in-fighting in Syria just like what happened in Iraq after Uncle Saddam was deposed. (i.e. increased death tolls due to Syrians killing each other) Without Assad at the helm, Syria will fall into chaos and a blood bath.

Thirdly, Syria is a strong ally of Iran. Israelis feel if Assad is toppled, the pearly gates to their dream of destroying Iran are opened.

Also Syria is closely allied with Hezbollah in Syria - without Assad's backing, Hezbollah would be rendered vulnerable in Lebanon, and Israel would definitely love for Hezbollah to fall.

Fourthly, Assad is an Alawite - a mystical religious minority dating back to Biblical times that has been almost genocided out of existence at various times in history - Alawites are a branch of Shia Islam ( a mystical minority religious group that the Sunnis would love to snuff). Israelis hate Shia Muslims. Ergo they hate Assad and would like to see Alawites have a bad ending, which would definitely happen if the Sunni jihadist "rebels" could gain control of Syria.

Fifthly, the new gas field discoveries - Assad and Israel have been fighting over ownership and also the location of a pipeline.

Israel cannot manipulate Assad, so Israelis feel they have a better chance working out a deal with some of their Sunni pals and since the Sunni "rebels"' strings are being pulled by Saudis, Turks, and Quatar, Israelis think removing Assad will be in their best interests. Previously Israel has worked co-operative deals with Sunni nations like Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt but never with Shia nations so Israelis think "the rebels" will be no different and that the House of Saud will keep them on a tight leash. (cough, cough)

As an aside, Alawites also are very respectful of Christianity -

Saddam was a Sunni and Israelis apparently didn't like him either. Am noting here also that Alawite Assad's wife is a Sunni, as an example of sectarian issues being hyperinflated and misreported by the insurgents' publicity agents. Prior to that section, starting at 12:20, Corbett speaks of the decades old religious-destablization agenda to reshape the Middle East, with Syria mentioned specifically at 14:10-14:57. The pipeline aspects are addressed, as well, through 39:04. This is excerpted from a June article at globalresearch about some of the pipeline/economic politics:

If the deposit reserves estimations prove to be correct, then, according to the Institute for Policy and Strategy assessment, starting from 2016 Israel may become a reliable alternative energy supplier for, at least, 50 years. According to these calculations, Israel has the capacity to supply Europe with up to 30 cubic meters annually and bring the dependence on Russian gas down to 23%.

In the Pepe Escobar interview segment of the Corbett Report video [28:54-39:04], Escobar mentions the Saudi Prince, "Bandar Bush", at 34:48 and his reported Sochi Olympics comments to Putin. More recently since the G20 summit and diplomatic turn of events in Syria, this was reported on September 10th: Abkhazia: Who Killed Russia’s Vice Consul?

A gunman reportedly opened fire September 9 on Russian Vice Consul Dmitry Vishernev and his wife Olga as they got into their car in Sukhumi, the capital of Russian protectorate of Abkhazia, to head to work. [...] The attack coincided with the fifth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Sukhumi. That fact prompted Russian Ambassador Semyon Grigoryev to suggest the murder was an act of terror meant to sabotage the friendship between Russia and its small Caucasus protégé. “Lots of people are not happy with deepening of Russian-Abkhaz relations and the fact that Abkhazia became a security shield of a kind for the [2014 Sochi] Olympic Games,” Grigoryev was quoted as saying by Abkhazia’s state news service, Apsnypress.

I posted a message about that interesting tidbit - Assad's wife being Sunni - on another thread last night. So it's old news to me. What the heart wants, the heart wants. Assad met his wife in London - she was a computer science/ French lit student at the time I think - when he was doing his residency in opthahlmology.

I don't think that "insurgents' publicity agents" are posting at Haaretz, ynet, jpost, which is where I got my "impressions" of the different reasons why Israelis want Assad removed by the US to answer Pinguinite's question in post #1 on this thread.

IMO sectarian issues are very real in ME nations. The issue of "tribalism" should not be dismissed as "hyper inflation" or "misreporting." The colonial powers took sectarian ongoing strife into account when they drew up the "crazy" borders, so the ME nations would never become unified wholes but rather continue to be internally divisive parts, warring tribes and clans at each others' throats. Furthermore, the present day US neocons' and neolibs' subtext agenda for "Liberating" Iraq, Egypt, Libya counted on sectarian factions and violence contributing to chronic chaos in the newly liberated nations, so Israel's security would be protected forever more.

As for Israelis not liking Saddam - and fyi, I did not name Iraq as being one of the Sunni nation partners with Israel - surely you must know that Saddam was a bigtime Palestinian benefactor - he paid $25,000 to the Palestinian families of a suicide bomber. Saddam despised the Israelis and vice versa - the Palestinian cause became Saddam's cause - and that was a major "personal" reason why the Zionists' conspired with the Neocons to have Saddam removed.

I don't dispute that there are sectarian and tribal issues in the Middle East; nor the disunification contrivances of the colonial powers, neocons/neolibs and other chaos agents. This is more what I meant to convey with regard to sectarian differences being overhyped and distorted with regard to the Syria antagonists:

Missed your post on Mr. and Mrs. Assad but was aware that you didn't name Iraq as being one of the Sunni nation partners with Israel. I remember the Palestinian issue re: Saddam Hussein. Since Israel was involved on the side of Iran during the Iraq-Iran War/Iran Contra, though, I still think Israel didn't like him even going that far back.
