Neandertals made the first specialized bone tools in Europe

Edited by Erik Trinkaus, Washington University, St. Louis, MO, and approved May 22, 2013 (received for review February 12, 2013)

Abstract

Modern humans replaced Neandertals ∼40,000 y ago. Close to the time of replacement, Neandertals show behaviors similar to those of the modern humans arriving into Europe, including the use of specialized bone tools, body ornaments, and small blades. It is highly debated whether these modern behaviors developed before or as a result of contact with modern humans. Here we report the identification of a type of specialized bone tool, lissoir, previously only associated with modern humans. The microwear preserved on one of these lissoir is consistent with the use of lissoir in modern times to obtain supple, lustrous, and more impermeable hides. These tools are from a Neandertal context proceeding the replacement period and are the oldest specialized bone tools in Europe. As such, they are either a demonstration of independent invention by Neandertals or an indication that modern humans started influencing European Neandertals much earlier than previously believed. Because these finds clearly predate the oldest known age for the use of similar objects in Europe by anatomically modern humans, they could also be evidence for cultural diffusion from Neandertals to modern humans.

Interesting read. Of course they make the same unstated assumptions that you will find in any establishment journal i.e., that anatomically modern man/woman dates to no more than about 35,000 years ago - despite the mountains of evidence which the establishment keeps trying to sweep under the carpet. Of course the carpet is now beginning to look pretty lumpy up there on that mound of sweepings.

There are a lot of issues here that lie under the surface.

One of the most fundamental rules, if one actually follows the Scientific Method, is that any existing theory must be revised to account for contradictory/contrary evidence. That is the Scientific Method which the lamestream claims to follow but in reality discards the exact moment some evidence is uncovered which would throw the popular theory into dispute and/or into the waste bin of history.

That attitude is apparent in this article if you know what you are looking for in terms of unspoken assumptions and bias.

From the full article:

Modern humans replaced Neandertals ∼40,000 y ago.

There is the first instance of bias, and given that it is the most basic, stated, premise of the ensuing argument invalidates the rest of the argument. It is an assumption (accepted as quasi-religious dogma among academia) that the writer knows with certainty that this is a fact. And yet the little thousand page tome titled "Forbidden Archaeology" full of unrefuted citations from the mainstream (before the "Iron Curtain" of Academia came down) listing study after study and excavation after excavation where evidence was unearthed, which if accepted as valid (which it was at the time - mostly the late 1800's and into the early 20th Century), would push the existence of anatomically modern humans back some several million years (at least).

Recent genetic studies show Neanderthal genes in what, today, we call anatomically modern human. So, the Thesis that we (anatomically modern humans) replaced Neanderthal is not really supported by the evidence. More accurate would be to say that those showing Neanderthal traits were subsumed within a larger genetic context. That would seem to be, at this time, a more accurate statement.

The other hidden bias here is in favor of modern evolutionary theory which seems invincible to actual observed evidence. The proponents of such do not so much use valid science to support their dogma but resort to "logic chopping" and personal attack to bludgeon anyone who asks even basic questions about their dogma - no matter how valid, or well evidenced.

Because these finds clearly predate the oldest known age for the use of similar objects in Europe by anatomically modern humans, they could also be evidence for cultural diffusion from Neandertals to modern humans.

Or they could equally well suggest a much greater age for anatomically modern humans. However, that would transgress against Darwin. "Burn the Heretic!"

Still, I do enjoy watching "modern" archaeologists and anthropologists stumble around as each time they unearth another piece of puzzle it is amusing to watch them try to limit the context and interpretation of the discovery to "academically acceptable" limits - regardless of whatever contortions they have to go through to do that. :-)

"“Believe nothing merely because you have been told it. Do not believe what your teacher tells you merely out of respect for the teacher. But whatsoever, after due examination and analysis, you find to be kind, conducive to the good, the benefit, the welfare of all beings - that doctrine believe and cling to, and take it as your guide.” ~ Gautama Siddhartha — The Buddha
