BALTIMORE, MD — In what could amount to multimillion-dollar damages, a Baltimore County jury has found former interventional cardiologist Mark Midei guilty of medical malpractice, the Baltimore Sun has reported[1]. According to the Sun, the jury found Midei guilty of placing three stents unnecessarily in the heart of Baltimore businessman Glenn Weinberg. Weinberg alleged that he lost millions of dollars in wages and suffered emotional repercussions after scaling back on some of his business activities.

The amount of the damages is scheduled to be determined next week.

Midei has been targeted by hundreds of lawsuits—as has his former hospital's owner, Catholic Health Initiatives—but few, notes the Sun, actually came before juries. A large settlement earlier this year kept many cases from being decided by juries. Approximately 45 civil suits remain, says the Sun.

Midei has been at the center of an "unnecessary-stenting" imbroglio that has dogged the doctor since 2007, as long chronicled by heartwire . Midei placed the stents while working at St Joseph Medical Center and ultimately lost his medical license after the Maryland Medical Board concluded he committed "repeated and serious" violations of the Medical Practice Act when he implanted the stents between 2007 and 2009.

According to the Sun, both Midei and Weinberg are prevented from commenting on the decision because of a judge-imposed gag order. During the trial, however, Midei maintained that he was "proud of the fact that I fixed him," referring to Weinberg. Medical records kept by Midei noted that the arterial segments he stented were 90%, 95%, and 95% stenosed—findings Weinberg's lawyers disputed.

If the arteries were almost shut down this must have been noticed by others in the operating room so I wonder why this come out out in evidence?

How did Weinberg(!) determine that he was over-stented?

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken
