Mark Witaschek, a successful businessman who has no criminal record and has never had a gun in Washington D.C. was arrested and is facing charges for violating D.C. law. The law requires residents to register every firearm with the police, and only registered gun owners can possess ammunition, which includes spent shells and casings. Acting on a tip from Mr. Witascheks ex-wife the police raided his home, drug his 16 year old son out of the shower after kicking in the bathroom door and handcuffed Mr. Witaschek and his girlfriend while searching the house for two hours. The police didnt find any guns but did find, One live round of 12-gauge shotgun ammunition, One handgun holster, One expended round of .270 caliber ammunition, and one box of Knight bullets for reloading. The D.C. police also obtained a warrant and searched Mr. Witascheks sisters home in Virgina. I know Im becoming a right-wing radical nut but what other conclusion can anyone come to other than we are living in a police-state. Last year D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier decided not to prosecute NBC News anchor David Gregory when he violated the gun-registration law by wielding an illegal 30-round magazine on live television. Chief Lanier said it, would not promote public safety to prosecute Mr. Gregory but she has apparently decided that an average law-abiding citizen is a threat to public safety and must be hunted down and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. When local police begin targeting citizens and applying the law differently because of a political agenda we are on our way to becoming a police state. The definition of a police state is, a totalitarian state controlled by a political police force that secretly supervises the citizens activities. My fear is that our police officers are becoming pawns of their politically motivated leaders. In our own Mississippi back-yard we have local police chiefs handing out no gun signs because they disagree with the State law. Our local Desoto County Sheriff decided he didnt like guns in the courthouse so he posted a sign on the door and instructed his deputies to arrest anyone who entered with a gun. Never mind the law clearly allowed citizens to enter the courthouse, since the Sheriff has a different political view he uses his power to make his own rules. How did D.C. Police Chief Lanier find enough officers willing to engage in kicking down Mr. Witascheks door? What kind of officer believes it is right to break down a bathroom door and drag a naked kid out of the shower while searching for illegal spent casings? Are these officers actually proud of the job they do? or do the care about anything other than a paycheck and the rush of power they get while dragging a defenseless kid out of the shower? The sad fact is I dont believe there is a shortage of officer right here in our state who would be willing to do the same. I hate believing this, Im not an anti-cop person. I volunteered as a Reserve Deputy years ago because I admire the job they do and wanted to know more about their work. At one time in my life I wanted to be a federal DEA or Customs agent, but the more I read the more concerned I become. Somewhere, somehow, citizens and law enforcement officers have got to take a stand. Weve got say no to these politicians, Sheriffs, and Police Chiefs who believe they have greater power than the law. We can pass additional laws that attempt to keep them under control but the only real solution is for average citizens, which includes the average cop, to take a stand and say NO, there will be no more violation of individuals rights. We are a nation of laws, we do not follow individuals, we follow laws. Unless we stand firm on our Constitution we will quickly become a police state. Flatfooters like all government bureaucrats have to do something when there's a complaint or they void the rationale for their existence.
