Are you dreading the time its going to take before you drift off? If youre struggling to get that much needed sleep maybe you should look at what youre doing before you get into bed. Think about your day. What goes into it? Maybe its work. Or its getting the kids to and from school then to practice and then home to get dinner ready. Or its the pile of bills or the vacation coming up. Im serious. Dont roll your eyes. Well, if doing that will help you fall asleep then go ahead. But really there are several things you can do to help you fall asleep when its time to catch some zzzzs. And aside from not only sleeping better youll see other improvements in your energy and all around health from these simple and enjoyable solutions. Hopefully theres no more counting sheep! In no particular order, here they are: Eat Foods high in Melatonin. Things like tart cherries, walnuts, almonds, strawberries and rice are loaded with melatonin. Theyre healthy for you and they wont jump start you when youre trying to unwind. Foods high in melatonin help promote peaceful, deeper sleep. Get Some Sweat Going. Burning calories and doing outdoor activities are a good way to burn calories and make sure youre fully ready for sleep at the end of the day. Its essentially the same concept as tiring out children. Say No To The Nightcap. A late night drink can actually ruin your slumber. This is especially true for women, so its best to lay off the cocktails and booze too late in the evening, ladies. Say Yes to Him. Many a joke has been made about how quickly men fall asleep after intercourse -- but there's actually a good reason for it. After being intimate, men's bodies flood with prolactin, a hormone that is also naturally higher during sleep. But he's not alone. Women actually produce more oxytocin, which can be a recipe for a very good night's sleep. Play It Again Sam. Studies show music almost always helps you relax if youre feeling a bit wound up or still thinking on the tasks of the day. Unplug from your smart phone or the TV and just put your ears to ease. And lastly
Wash Off The Day. Taking a bath or a shower is one of the most obvious, but also best ways to wind down after a long day. Its a great precursor to drifting off to a better nights sleep. My little homunculus pulls the sleep lever whenever I listen to a radio discussion of scientific matters, things I really like to hear. Of course I wake up after the program is over.
