Title: Ali in exile: Rarely seen photographs capture Muhammad Ali when he was banned from the ring after refusing to serve in Vietnam

He was born Cassius Clay, but we all know him by his chosen Islamic name - Muhammad Ali.

While there are many pictures of the legendary boxer in the ring, very few show him in the years he was banned from the sport for refusing to serve in the Vietnam War.

'War is against the teachings of the Holy Qur'an,' he said. 'I'm not trying to dodge the draft. We are not supposed to take part in no wars unless declared by Allah or The Messenger. We don't take part in Christian wars or wars of any unbelievers.'

When he failed to enlist on April 28, 1967, he was not only arrested, but had his boxing license suspended and his title stripped.

Initially a Houston, Texas court found him guilty of violating Selective Service but the U.S. Supreme Court overruled that decision in 1971 and Ali was free to enter the ring again.

Ali never had to serve jail time, but he still wasn't allowed to fight between 1967 and 1971.

Instead he spent those years at the height of the civil rights movement speaking at colleges and universities. He never regretted his decision to stand up for what he believed in.

'I'm happy cause I'm free,' he told Time magazine in 1968. 'I've made a stand all black people are gonna have to make sooner or later - whether or not they can stand up to the master'.

The following photo set shows Ali during 1968, when the boxer was still banned from boxing but continuing to command the attention of Americans across the country.

I detest grumpy old men !

Ali didn't get anything for free. The Vietnam war, and for that matter all of them, are supportive of the real free riders. In a really free society a man should be able to decide for himself if he wishes to engage in war.

But, thanks for the comment.

Fair nuff.

All my life we have been at war.

Being from the dregs of society, none of us received a free ride, NONE. The free riders were NOT opposing the system, rather they were USING it as did Ali.

Would Ali have gotten a free ride if he was a cotton picker from Alabama??? Of course not.

"Nobodies" that resist are shot or hauled off in chains.

Those of us at the bottom understand the system full well and this back during the Civil War says it all...

"J P Morgan had escaped military service in the Civil War by paying $300 to a substitute. So did John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, Philip Armour, Jay Gould, and James Mellon. Mellon's father had written to him that "a man may be a patriot without risking his own life or sacrificing his health. There are plenty of lives less valuable."

Indeed, I was one of the "less valuable".

Eddie Slovik was a nobody, a less valuable, Ike shot him.

Desertion from the front lines.

He went behind the lines, turned himself in, said he could not take the bombing and shelling. Thousands did the same thing.

Ike, never fired a shot, never had his hands dirty in combat, decided to take another mans life to set an example.

That takes a lot of gall.

You have read history...and remembered.

Patton was involved with two malingerers. At least one if not both were jews and jew doctors kept giving them a pass because their nerves were bad.

Recall this....In fall of 1944, when Bastogne became a nightmare, Ike, Bradley were in London for the holiday.

Patton was the only field commander of note on the mainland.

Ali would have ended up in a rice paddy and would likely have been shot due to his worthlessness in a battlefield environment, no amount of training would have saved him from that fate.

I do remember that. The 101st Airborne still insists that they did not need to be rescued. But Patton disengaged his forces and drove 200 miles to their rescue. After he broke thru the German lines, it allowed the wounded to be brought out, and food and ammo to be brought in. ;)

My memory fails me on number, but in WW1 MacArthur garnered at least six silver stars.

As a Colonel, he would strap on a 45 cal, and go alone into no mans land to recon the Germans. Everyone else would send lowest ranking enlisted men out to do the dirty work.

In otherwords he knew the priceless value of self reliance. Never ask of another for what you can do for yourself.

Normal procedure is for the Colonel to tell his EO to send a three man recon out in no mans land after dark to probe the enemy positions.

The EO is hot to please the Col so he tells a LT squad leader to get it done. The LT tells the lead enlisted Sgt to take care of it.

The Sgt picks a Cpl he does not like and tells him to hit it on the run. The Cpl knows of two new guys that are tying to stay hidden.

The Cpl, having been this route before clues in the newbies, we go out aways, find cover, take an hour nap and then go back.

We tell the truth, we did not see a damned thing.

Cpl tells the misfits, anything I say, you back it up.

Two things I recall about Cassius Clay; I was ecstatic when Frazer beat him in '71? And that rope-a-dope strategy sure did scramble his brain.

Ali and Frazier's first fight, held at the Garden on March 8, 1971, was nicknamed the "Fight of the Century", due to the tremendous excitement surrounding a bout between two undefeated fighters, each with a legitimate claim as heavyweight champions. Veteran boxing writer John Condon called it "the greatest event I've ever worked on in my life." The bout was broadcast to 35 foreign countries; promoters granted 760 press passes.[32]

Adding to the atmosphere were the considerable pre-fight theatrics. Ali portrayed Frazier as a "dumb tool of the white establishment." "Frazier is too ugly to be champ," Ali said. "Frazier is too dumb to be champ." Ali also frequently called Frazier an Uncle Tom. Dave Wolf, who worked in Frazier's camp, recalled that, "Ali was saying, 'the only people rooting for Joe Frazier are white people in suits, Alabama sheriffs and members of the Ku Klux Klan. I'm fighting for the little man in the ghetto.' Joe was sitting there smashing his fist into the palm of his hand, saying, 'What the fuck does he know about the ghetto?'"[32]

The fight lived up to its billing. In a preview of their two other fights, a crouching, bobbing and weaving Frazier constantly pressured Ali, getting hit regularly by Ali jabs and combinations, but relentlessly attacking and scoring repeatedly, especially to Ali's body. The fight was even in the early rounds, but Ali was taking more punishment than ever in his career. On several occasions in the early rounds he played to the crowd and shook his head "no" after he was hit. In the later rounds—in what was the first appearance of the "rope-a-dope strategy"—Ali leaned against the ropes and absorbed punishment from Frazier, hoping to tire him. In the 11th round, Frazier connected with a left hook that wobbled Ali, but because it appeared that Ali might be clowning as he staggered backwards across the ring, Frazier hesitated to press his advantage, fearing an Ali counter-attack. In the final round, Frazier knocked Ali down with a vicious left hook, which referee Arthur Mercante said was as hard as a man can be hit. Ali was back on his feet in three seconds [33] Nevertheless, Ali lost by unanimous decision, his first professional defeat.

Cassius Clay, this icon to Black history, retired with substantial damage because he let himself get beaten on for rounds at a time while the opponent got tired. His strategy was then to use a burst of saved energy to win the fight. Rope a dope as a boxing technique has never been used before or after Ali. No boxer has ever been as dopey as he was. So much for this Black racist who was nothing more than a creation of the White media intended for the consumption of likewise brain damaged Americans. I’m glad some of us on 4um have institutional knowledge of this sad chapter in our history.

I'm fighting for the little man in the ghetto.'

I remember when they killed MLK, Jr. The blacks on the West Side of Chicago burned down most of those old neighborhoods. There were blocks, and blocks of desolation.

When they found out that King had been shot, they cancelled all the leaves for the Guards at the Cook County Jail. One Guard, because he had a good job, he was able to get a mortgage on a 4-flat. He lived on the 2nd floor. When he opened the door to go to work, there was a black guy standing there. He was ready to light a Molotov cocktail. The Deputy said to him, "What do you think you're doing?" The black guy said, "I'll show whitey. I'm gonna burn down this building." The Deputy pulled his pistol and killed him right where he stood.

When my friend found out what happened, he said, "How are you going to explain that?" The Deputy said, "When they come along and pick him up, it's just another dead nigger." ;)
