Health See other Health Articles Title: Daily aspirin not recommended for healthy people PressTV A new study has warned healthy people not to take aspirin on their own in the hope of reducing risk of a heart attack, stroke and even some cancers. Though daily aspirin therapy may lower risk of heart attack, it is not recommended for everyone even the health people around 50s who consume daily aspirin to have its benefits, new study emphasized. The study was conducted by the NHS National Institute for Health Research in collaboration with Warwick Medical School in England. The research led the experts to consider the daily aspirin therapy a “fine balance” of risks and benefits while the drug raises risk of bleeding in the brain and stomach. "It would be lovely to say over-50s should take an aspirin a day and have much less cancer, but the research hasn't yet been done and we should be cautious,” said the study leader professor Aileen Clarke from Warwick Medical School. Although taking an occasional aspirin or two is safe for most adults to use for headaches, body aches or fever, daily use of aspirin can have serious side effects, researchers announced. An earlier study indicated that people who take aspirin for many years, even of the low-dose variety, are threatened by higher risk of blindness. The study carried out at the University of Sydney in Australia unraveled that regular aspirin use developed risk of neovascular AMD, or the “wet form” of age-related macular degeneration. Since the drug must be prescribed based on the people’s medical history, they should have a discussion with doctor before beginning daily aspirin therapy on their own. Meanwhile, there has always been debate about whether all people over 50 should take a daily, low dose aspirin. The American Cancer Society in Atlanta had earlier unraveled that the people over 60s who used aspirin every day were less likely to die from different types of cancer by up to 40 percent. "Aspirin is extremely important for many heart patients, but for people free of heart disease the jury is still out as the risks are likely to outweigh the benefits,” the senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation Amy Thompson stressed. "Further research is required to shed light on who else is likely to benefit the most from taking aspirin."
