What is Leaky Gut Syndrome?

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.
Question: I have been told I have Leaky Gut Syndrome. Can you explain what this is?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
This is a non-medical term used to describe a bowel condition that needs to be further defined. The hypothesis is that the bowel wall becomes more permeable to bacteria and viruses and this sets the stage for pain, gas, and spasm caused by irritable bowel syndrome.
Such symptoms can be caused by an infection, colitis, or other digestive problems and should be evaluated by a medical doctor or gastroenterologist (a specialist in bowel health).
Most people with this condition have irritable bowel syndrome that can be managed effectively by a high-fiber diet and appropriate anti-spasm medications.
