CAPE CORAL, Fla. - It was just a matter of time before the City of Cape Coral caught up with her. We first told you about Robin Speronis last month... and her alternative lifestyle, called Living Off the Grid. She lives without running water or electricity -- by choice. But her off-the-grid home is now on the radar of Cape Coral code enforcement.

"I'm going to bring this to the attention of anyone who will listen until justice is served," Robin Speronis tells 4 In Your Corner's Liza Fernandez as both sit outside her home.

And Speronis says -- what the City of Cape Coral did the day after the story about her "Off the Grid" lifestyle aired in November is -- unjust.

"A code enforcement officer came, knocked on the door then posts a placard that says uninhabitable property, do not enter," says Robin as she reads the sign.

A Cape Coral code enforcement officer posted a "notice to vacate" one day after our story aired.

"Putting a woman who lives by herself, who is a widow, out on the street without any due process of law is unfathomable," says the outgraged homeowner.

The notice cites international property maintenance code and states the property is unsafe to be lived in, but Robin wonders how code enforcement would know without ever having been inside the home.

The city code compliance manager tells 4 In Your Corner he tagged the home because it doesn't have running water or electrcity, although neither modern comfort is mentioned as a requirement in the code cited by the city on the notice.

While Robin won't say whether she's been living in the home since the notice was posted, she does say the city is overreaching and threatening to take away her home -- which she owns free and clear with taxes up to date.

"Where is the justice? Why did they choose me," she asks. "…because I was exercising my First Amendment rights of free speech in discussing living off the grid."

A local attorney has since agreed to take on Robin's case for free. And the city says if she can prove she can sustain herself and her home without water or electricty both parties might be able to come to a solution.

Society should always make room for the nuts, if for humor if nothing else.

As a perfect example, I'd had to make my own space, oftentimes by beating up people. Yet I've kept my sense of humor.

I hope she sticks this right in the City's pitute. They would deserve every bit of it. I intend to do a similar thing where I live. ;)

I wonder how the city would feel about our settler ancestors? Their idea of "running water" was the creek "down the way", their idea of sewage treatment was to dig a bigger hole, and lighting was by candle or Whale Oil (hissssss!).

Their are a lot of bigger fish to fry - such as the poisons in our food and water from Monsatan, BP, and the radiation from Fuckushima that is killing the Pacific Ocean (with nothing done about it by the Monster-in-Chief).

I admire her fortitude, but have trouble understanding the bit about running water. A friend of mine lived in a house without water for a week or so, it was simply horrid. I hope she has a well nearby, my friend didn't and the stench was overpowering.

They didn't say she doesn't have sewer service; the video shows the toilet tank filled with water...who knows where she acquires it?

My grandparents used to tell us about those times, nothing but an outhouse - and this was in the late 1920's in a developed city. The thing I still carry with me is Grandma talking about how their dad (my great grandfather, I suppose - never knew him) would have to walk out with them, the outhouse was in the back yard near the alley, and keep a watchful eye because of the "bums" (her word) loitering about. Must have been early 30's.

My grandparents used a one-holer and a slop-bucket till the early sixties. They lived in the country so the only worry was the occasional skunk wandering about.

That is a matter of necessity, not choice. I pay about $30 a month for water and sewer, well worth it in IMO.

Maybe she used a hose from the neighbors?

FWIW - there are enough white-wing dove in this yard to feed Austin's homeless for a week.

That's cheating! That's like my friend who always said he gave up smoking but instead just bummed cigs from everyone else instead of buying them.

Prolly taste better than the pigeons and starlings we have around here. I estimated 600 starlings in my back yard one day, and it's only about 3,200 square feet.

Our last bill from Austin Energy, the city monopoly:

Electric $35.99

Water 40.21

Sewer 16.05

Clean Community Service (WTF?) 6.65

Solid Waste Services 15.81

Drainage Service 9.20

Street Service 7.80

Total Due $131.71 - it would have been $330+ had I not purchased a separate meter ($1800) for the lawn irrigation system to show the true use of their precious sewer-lines.

These dip-wads wettest dream is that Austin become as PC/green/compact/Agenda 21 as are Portland and Seattle.

And they don't mind taxing/feeing/charging the dog-schit out of us to get there.

I just wish that Joe Stack had taken his Cessna to a City Council meeting instead of the IRS field office; much more good would have been achieved. imo

My Mom was born on a ranch in the middle of the Rockies. No running water, no plumbing - other than the outhouse which, in the Winter, got a mite cold and covered in snow from time to time. She also had fresh air, horses (every little girl's dream), and the freedom to play - under the watchful eye of my Grandparents, the ranch hands, and a Border Collie that would not let her out of the yard. She said she used to get so mad at that dog because she would grab hold of her skirt and not let go if she tried to leave the yard. :-) I pity the poor Mountain Lion that came near.

Don't leave out subjugation, serfdom, poverty, depopulation, violence, and "Brave New World" crossed with "1984" enslavement of the survivors.
