The Bill of Rights

Today, Dec. 15, is the anniversary of the 1791 ratification of our Bill of Rights, the first 10 Amendments to our Constitution.

The Bill of Rights was inspired by three remarkable documents: John Locke's 1689 thesis, Two Treatises of Government, regarding the protection of “property” (in the Latin context, proprius, or one's own “life, liberty and estate”); in part from the Virginia Declaration of Rights authored by George Mason in 1776 as part of that state's Constitution; and, of course, in part from our Declaration of Independence authored by Thomas Jefferson.

Read in context, the Bill of Rights is both an affirmation of innate individual rights and a clear delineation on constraints upon the central government. As oft trampled and abused as the Bill of Rights is, Patriots should remain vigilant in the fight for our rights.

You are, very, welcome.

Perhaps I should have included the text of the BOR, as I'm sure that many, even here, have never read it.

"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it." - Frederic Bastiat

I'll do it:

Learn the Bill of Rights-Finger Tricks - 3.5 minutes

Comments at the YouTube site:

"I memorized the Bill of Rights in under 4 minutes with these hand signs"

"I'm just a little confused on the 7th amendment, I'm having a tough time figuring out what those hand symbols mean. that and the ninth one..."

"I think what it was trying to say for 7 was you can make a 20 with your hands. Like 2 fingers is the 2, and 0 on the other hand is 0 so you make 20. but really, you're using all 5 fingers to make the 0."

"#9 is about having rights reserved that aren't explicitly listed in the Constitution. You hold up all 9 fingers except for 1 thumb. The rights still exist (just like your hidden thumb still exists when hidden) even though they're not expressly mentioned in the document. Get what I'm saying? #7-You're using 7 fingers to make a 20 with your hands. Even though 1 hand is just a fist, you're using all 5 fingers. The 20 is to help you remember you can have a trial for anything involving more than $20.

"Could you please explain the 4th and the 10th?"

"For the 4th, you're making a fist to represent police banging on your door since the 4th Amendment is all about protection from unlawful searches & seizures. On the 10th, you're basically "raising the roof" because you're happy that some rights have been reserved to the states or the people."
