A historic Japanese submarine has been discovered on the ocean floor a few miles from Pearl Harbor.

The 78-foot (24-metre) submarine could provide the first physical evidence to back US claims that it fired first against Japan in World War II and inflicted the first casualties.

It was a sobering moment, realising that this was the shot that started the Pacific war

Terry Kerby

The sub fell prey to a US Navy destroyer on 7 December 1941, the day of the Pearl Harbor attack.

"It's the shot that started World War II between the Americans and the Japanese," said John Wiltshire, associate director of the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory, which discovered the sub.

The research team found the Japanese vessel at a depth of 1,200 feet (366 metres) while out on a training exercise.

It is thought to contain the remains of two Japanese crewmen.

First shot

The vessel was one of four Japanese midget submarines to participate in the Pearl Harbor attack.

The newly discovered sub was believed to be the one sunk by the destroyer USS Ward more than an hour before the attack.

Mr Wiltshire said the divers were sure the sub was sunk by the USS Ward because of a bullet hole in the conning tower and because it still had both its torpedoes.

Historian Daniel Martinez has interviewed the crew who fired the first shot, and a pilot who saw the submarine sink.

"What they saw and what they felt was their recollection, now the proof has been found," he said.

The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor left 2,390 people dead, 1,178 wounded, 21 US ships heavily damaged and 323 aircraft damaged or destroyed.

Good condition

Terry Kerby, who piloted the deep-diving submersible that found the submarine, said the sub was in excellent condition. Sunken Japanese submarine The sub is believed to contain the remains of two men

"To actually come across it was a sobering moment, realising that this was the shot that started the Pacific war," he said.

A National Geographic expedition set out to try and find the sub in 2000.

A team of deep-water researchers led by undersea explorer Robert Ballard spent 10 days searching for the Japanese sub, using remotely operated imaging vehicles.

Yeah, the rest of the Japanese fleet was just coming over for R&R, but when they saw what happened to their innocent mini-sub, they went ballistic.

Roosevelt conned us into war.

This article doesn't point out enough. Apparently some American WWII vets said that they sunk this submarine prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. I think the Japanese still were going to attack. Just that we knew about it. I'm sure you heard that we had broken their codes that they send messages with. These Guys sunk the Sub, then our government let Pearl Harbor continue withoug warning our people at Pearl Harbor.

If you hate the American people, your going to really love their government.

Yeah, I spent an entire college semester working (with 10 others) on just one question:

"Who was responsible for our being surprised at Pearl Harbor?"

We decided most of the blame lay with the US gov't, with only about 30% going to Japan.

Roosevelt was a real POS. Why do the old folks like him so much. I was working for a man a few years back. When I was just learning about Roosevelt. Anyway this man was alive at that time. I asked him what he remembered about Roosevelt. This guy really liked him, and he thought I did too. One day he gave me some Roosevelt pin (you know the ones you stick on your shirt. The guy was very nice, I didn't have the heart to tell him I thought Roosevelt was a POS.

When I was in junior high, we were studying Roosevelt/Depression/New Deal in history class. The teacher told us how if we went and talked to our grandparents, they'd tell us how much they loved Roosevelt and what a great guy he was.

Big mistake in my family--my grandfather launched into a 20-minute tirade against FDR, with my grandmother sitting nearby, looking like I just told them that "teacher said drugs are fun".

I love children, but I can never finish a whole one.

Well, he's long dead now, but was smart enough in his day.

I just mention the story because it was one of the first disconnects I remember as far as "what they tell you" vs. "how things are".
