Tuna sells for thousands in Tokyo

05 January 2014 A sushi restaurateur has paid more than £42,800 (7.36 million yen) for a 230kg bluefin tuna in the year's celebratory first auction at Tokyo's Tsukiji market.

Kiyoshi Kimura's record-winning bid last year of 15.4 million yen (£89,845) for a 222kg fish drew complaints that prices had soared out of line. Mr Kimura also set the previous record of 5.64 million yen (£32,819) at the 2012 new year's auction.

"I'm glad that the congratulatory price for this year's bid went back to being reasonable," said Mr Kimura, whose Kiyomura company operates the Sushi-Zanmai restaurant chain.

Environmentalists say growing worldwide consumption of bluefin tuna is leading to its depletion, and that those in charge of managing fisheries for the species are failing to take responsible action to protect it.

Japanese eat about 80% of all bluefin tuna caught worldwide, though demand is growing.

Mmmm. Tuna sushi. Doesn't that remind you of that night in Chicago when you worked security for The Bangles? :)

Not to mention that it's full of radiation. Nothing for miles around there is fit to eat.

The Japs banned fishing from waters anywhere near Japan. This will greatly impact the Sushi industry.

When I worked concert security, there was a Sushi bar near one of the venues. I woud go over and get a plate of it to go, and eat it at work. That green hot sauce they put on it always kept my sinuses clear. ;)

“How do you take a ship and place it into a nuclear plume for five plus hours, how do you suck up nuclear contaminated waste into the water filtration system and think for one minute that there’s no health risk to anybody on board?” Simmons said.

Sick U.S. sailors have filed suit against Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), claiming the power company hid radiation information from the U.S. Navy after Fukushima’s initial meltdown.
