I had to put my 13-year-old pug to sleep today, and damn if it didn't bother me a lot more than both my parents going within six weeks of each other. That doesn't make much sense to me. But no more pugs for me. That's the second one I've had to down.

Five days ago he was just fine, then wham, downhill. Went totally blind, stopped eating, became incontinent, stopped walking, then today very labored breathing, and weirdly, his eyes started shredding. I had an appointment Thursday, but when I saw those eyes I called around and said he has to go right now. Found one place about four blocks away. Right now he's in a box in the back seat (cold outside) and I'm burying him tomorrow.

Bob, I don't often see eye-to-eye with you, but you did exactly the right thing. You allowed your beloved dog to pass with dignity and without too much suffering. No greater love could a pet owner show. You & I won't be allowed that privilege. Sometimes, how we deal with death is more important how we deal with life. You did good.

I know it's hard, me and my wife have been through this many times over the years, mostly dogs: Sonny 1 & 2 (German Shepherds), Stephen (cat), Chrystal (horse), Rambo (black lab), Sadie Mae (smooth collie), Zena (pronounced Zeena, blond shepherd mix), Tango (terrier mutt) and the three animals extant that Teri has left me with (Princess, German Shepherd, Gyro, terrier mutt, Jasper, horse), and countless others I've probably forgotten over the last three plus decades I was with my wife.

I agree with you, you should never get another Pug. You should get two or more. Dogs are pack animals, and unless you're a recluse and are always with your dog, it should have company.

Godspeed, my friend,

Jim

Amen.

I'd add, that even if you're mostly at home, any pet needs another buddy...dogs, cats, whatever.

They do need another four-legged friend.
