I've heard that the only ones worth buying cost over $500. The rest are junk.

If you are looking for one to test food then save your money, it won't work. They are not sensitive enough to pick up small amounts of radioactivity hidden in food that can give you cancer if you eat it, but be perfectly harmless just being close to it. Only a lab with very expensive equipment can properly test food for radiation and get accurate results.
