XI'AN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Zhang Shuxia, an obstetrician in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, was sentenced to death with two years' reprieve on Tuesday for trafficking seven babies, a local court said.

Zhang, a doctor with Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, was found guilty of selling seven babies, one of whom later died, to human traffickers after persuading their parents to give up their "sick" newborns, according to the Weinan Intermediate People's Court.

The court said though Zhang was found not guilty of causing a baby's death after the infant was sold to human traffickers, she still held responsibility for leaving the baby unattended.

The baby died after a human trafficker surnamed Pan abandoned the infant and threw the baby into a garbage ditch, according to the court.

Zhang was also deprived of political rights for life and all of her property has been confiscated.

On July 20, a mother surnamed Dong suspected her baby had been abducted and reported the incident to police. The baby was later found in good condition in neighboring Henan Province on Aug. 5.

Zhang was detained in August and stood trial on Dec. 30, 2013.

Zhang said she will consider whether to appeal.
